Lets see opinels - Pic Thread

Thanks! It's really working well for me. And it's always nice to personalize your tools (when they don't end up ruined haha)

edited to add the Celtic cross engraving they put on for me

Hi Gary, I've got a question for you.

I've been going back to using my Opinels lately and remembering how much fun they are. I've decided to get something other than the beechwood, something a bit nicer, as well as looking to try their Sandvik. So, I'm looking to order a walnut handled one, once I decide between the 6 and 8 (I've one of each and love both, but I digress).

Anyways, I want to get an engraving as well, and being Catholic if I'm getting an engraving I'd love to get a cross, and the celtic cross engraving is beautiful. I check the Opinel USA website and seen a couple pics of the celtic cross under the portfolio section, but none listed under the engravings listing where the ID #'s can be found. It's a small section they have listed, so was that a special order and not a standard one?

They called me to make sure what I wanted and had to direct them to that image 185

Ah, I see what you mean. I realize I should have PMed you that question or just call Opinel rather than go as here in a pic thread, but I thank you for your help. I'm sure it's going to be a beautiful knife if your picture is any indication:)

Not really my thing....

Waaaait, it's all coming back to me-- "Not everyone likes Opinels," or "There's more than one of us who feel the same" or some other such offering of opinion. A-hem.

(Very nice find, all the same. :p)

Don't know how that one can not be your cup o' tea, Jack, it's just awesome! Once the patina evens out, it'll look even better! (Those tiger-stripes have got to go... luckily that'll be easy and involuntary. ;) )

I have to agree Jack, that is a really nice Opinel. Don't believe I have ever seen one with a bone handle.

Jack - that's a sweet #7!

Sonnemann - I've been really tempted by those paring knives for a while now....how thick is the blade stock?
Edit - just a quick comparison to your folding Opinel, no calipers needed! :)

Excuse me, ~P, but you do realize that heretics were burned at the stake at one time?
:D

Thanks for the kind comments, but while I like the customization, particularly the dropped point, and the extra weight in the handle, I doubt I'll be keeping this. In fact, if I hadn't already put up a fixed blade for my giveaway, it'd probably be going in there. Maybe the next milestone if I still have it then as I know how much you folk like your Opinels, and I do think this is a very nice one :)

You are a master of the art of tantalizing my friend:)

Great photos and collections from all of you!

I only have 3 ... a No. 7, No. 8 and a No. 9. My carbon 8 is beginning to develop a patina and the size of it sure comes in handy as my "go to" knife.

A longtime coworker got himself a No. 8 in stainless. He's now long-hauling and away from his family several nights a week. I made him the pouch in the picture to protect his opie while he's dining on the road. He says he's done with standard issue utensils after putting his "Chuck" to use.

That's a nice looking pouch you made leatherworker. Chuck is lucky to have such a talented friend.

I actually was thinking I should get some calipers...anyway, here is (L to R):
the paring knife, a slim #8 (they're not kidding), and a standard #8.

Sonnemann - thank you for the comparison shot - much appreciated! :)
The paring knife is thin, but that slim #8 is something else entirely!
That really must be something to behold in the kitchen
