let's see some crazy and/or stupid sharp edges

Is there a difference in hair poping and shaving sharp, or is it just a saying?

Hair popping tends to mean sharper, when the hairs sort of 'ping' off in front of the edge and pop into the air. Just shaving sharp doesn't have to be all that sharp.

I have been a gun guy for many years, with carrying a EDC folder, and a fixed blade when hunting or camping. This is the first site I have ever been on that is designed for blades, and not custom 1911's. So please excuse my noob ignorance when it comes to blade talk.

There's no point in showing you my edges, they so sharp that the actual edge is transparent.

When I swing them through the air, it smells like being at the ocean. That's because of the molecules that have had their outer electrons sliced off, thus becoming negative ions.

The electrons themselves stick to the knife blade and, it being conductive, are transfered to me. If I do it wearing rubber shoes I end up with a purple/blue glow around my body, with my hair standing up and crackling menacingly.

My blades are so sharp death himself comes to me to sharpen his scythe - he says I'm in for a good long life (so long as I don't lose my honing stones!)

:D

They're both pretty subjective terms, so I think you can trust it's just a saying.

Scarry sharp....hehe good one!

I need to clean up some of my good INFI edges and get some good pics.

This is the best Busse "Kin" edge pic I have in my files - Swamp Rat - Howling Rat (stripped):

A thing of beauty, wow.

No worries Bro - just ask questions. This is where I learned most of my knife stuff too.

There's another term, "taking the tops off."

That means the edge is fine and sharp enough that it actually cuts the tops off the hairs, without having to touch the edge to the skin. I've managed a couple of edges that sharp. All of them can take the tops off my chest hairs (or pubes if I'm feeling brave - you really wanted to know that, didn't you?) but taking the tops off my finer arm hairs is a real sharpening task.

There's also 'hair splitting' where you can hold a single hair and split it or whittle on it, without having to press it against a surface to cut into it.

It is all subjective, and depends a lot on your hair type. But there is a definite progression in sharpness, in increasing order: Shaving -> hair popping -> hair-splitting/taking the tops off.

 i think you meant to put this in the chuck norris thread?

Yep, I did it by hand. It didn't take too long on the DMT XX Coarse, Coarse, Fine, then sandpaper.

Wow, now that's patience. Reminds me of a bit I saw about a Japanese sword polisher who said a blade will take from 8-10 days work!

I intended to put more of a rubbed finish on it but never got around to it. It's sitting in a sheath somewhere around here...

I think hair popping came from a test done on razors.Hold a hair and swipe it with the blade,if sharp enough you can hear the hair pop.I had a Case years ago that I could get an edge like that on but it would roll over by just cutting through a piece of paper.
