Lets see some Hinderer action

Always in my pocket, even if I’m carrying another.

My latest bit of sharpening work brought a Hinderer accross my path that I liked way, way more than I expected, the non-flipper Spanto in M390. I am seriously tempted to pick on of these up. This one was a good bit of fun to sharpen, even if that Spanto grind takes forever. I always love restoring the edge a knife that gets loved and used!

Awesome collection photoman . Great variety of different blade profiles you have there ! Which one do you like best overall ?

I’m not sure.
  • The 3” Wharnie gets carried/used most because it’s a great size and blade shape for EDC. Unfortunately it’s also the worst example in terms of finish (lots of stray machine marks) and flipping action (almost no detent = zero flipping action).
  • The Bowie XM-18 has a detent that’s too strong but it’s my favorite in terms of appearance.
  • The newer knives (Eklipse, Half-Track, MP-1) are all great in terms of finish and flipping action.

I said goodbye to my first HalfTrack today, and it's on its way to a new owner on the opposite coast. I didn't dislike the knife in any way, though the Working Finish didn't appeal to me as much as the stonewash on my other Hinderers. It's just that I found one that I liked a whole lot more and really didn't need two. Maybe I'll see ya' around the forums, little guy...

Here's my keeper. The stonewash on the blade is finer than my other Hinderers, but I really like it's almost-polished look. The textured Ti lockside is especially sweet and the whole knife is set off with the addition of copper hardware from USA Made Blade. Thanks to Whitty for throwing in the additional copper clip screws.

That’s a beauty. If they would ever start making more stonewashed ones, I would buy one. Can’t find any but working finish and not a fan at all. Or find stonewashed but only in all Ti, and would never pay that much. So, just chilling til a stonewashed/g10 droppoint is produced again. I was able to find 1 SW blade out there in the Internets but with a funky color scale. Ugh. Finding the right combo is painful.

Yeah, I'm always surprised at how much more the all-Ti Hinderers are. It's not like there isn't at least a thinner slab of Ti under the Micarta or G10 scale anyway.
I remember we PM'd about my WF knife and you said you just couldn't get by that finish. I wouldn't say I hate the WF, but I like RHK stonewash so much that that's the finish I want on any of mine. I would say that I liked the Battle Blue slabs alright--anodized then stonewashed plus seemingly run through with some metal media as well. I think I'd like the Battle Black too. Kinda like the ZT blackwash finish or the Stealth finish on my Olamic Wayfarer 247--PVD coating stonewashed.

I saw your knife on the exchange and seriously thought about purchasing it. I happened to find one of my most wanted knives around the same time and couldn't bring myself to buy both. I would eventually like a half track to match my orange XM-18.

I never thought I'd care for the HalfTrack, but having said as much in a post, someone sent me one of his to try. He said to treat it like my own--sharpen, adjust, lube, whatever--and keep it as long as I wanted. I put a mirror edge on it and got it flipping out just super. When I sent it back after two weeks I really missed it. I bought the one I just sold, then found my keeper.

They're very cool little knives, and if you're into Hinderers I think you'd enjoy one.

My favorite small knife is my NeOn Ultralight, but, as different as the two are, my HalfTrack is right there with it.

Thanks for the info! I was on the fence for a while too. In fact I didn't really get why so many people loved Hinderers, and then decided to buy the XM-18 off the exchange. I like the knife much more than I expected to. I get it now. At this point my favorite small knife is my Les George ESV. I can't imagine a better small knife, but I will certainly have fun trying to find it!

Nice XM No Choil Slicer, Phil. I really like Les George's stuff, too, and have his Wilson Combat Eagle and the LG designed ZT0909. I like that little ESV and would rather have that than the little ZT version.

I was the same way about Hinderers before I got my first XM. I've had 6 of them now and have kept 4 I really like--XM18 3.5 Spanto, XM24 I had re-ground by Josh at REK, MP1 red Micarta (maybe my favorite), and the HalfTrack above. There's just something about the attention to design detail, the fine workmanship, and F&F in such a substantial knife that appeals to me. I had a Hinderer-designed Fox Viper that was sort of an MP1/HalfTrack amalgam and still have a ZT0562CF "Hinderer", but they're not even close to a "real" RHK in my estimation. Just like CRKs, RHKs have created their own unique niche in the Pantheon of excellent knives and, like I've said before, there's something of Chris in CRKs and something of Rick in RHKs that give each of their knives a particular personality.

Been around the block.

I have to say.

I will take this over the Inkosi. It fits my lifestyle and just screams GO FOR IT :). The grip and blade angle is a bit more positive and aggressive.

I am a CRK guy all day but this non flipper in M390 is just heavenly.

For now.....
