So, favorite Hinderer purchase of 2017,
whitty
? Well, 2017 was my big Hinderer year as I went from 1 to 5 (+1, sorta) along the way, settling in currently at 4. I began the year with only my XM18 3.5" Spanto Dragon....
Wanting a different blade grind, I picked up another XM18 FDE MonkeyEdge Sparrow in January, 2017. I liked the blade and it was a seriously snappy flipper, but the FDE all over just didn't float my boat, so off it went after a month or so....
Next came an XM24 Spanto with a MonkeyEdge Frag scale installed and the original orange G10 included. I loved the orange and put that on straight away and sold the ME scale a little later...
When the MP1 first came out I was intrigued by the size, the blade shape, just the whole package. Later, when I saw the red Micarta versions of a couple posters here, I knew I had to have one. It took a while, but one popped up at DLT trading and I jumped right on it. I don't know if there were one or two there, but there weren't any shortly after I got mine....
Now, for a slight detour, and not a new knife, per se, but it was maybe even better than something new--I sent my XM24 Spanto off to Josh at REK for a re-grind and it was like trading a sharpened prybar for a light saber. High, large-radius hollow grind in 600 grit finish with Josh's sick, wicked sharp edge on it....
Another detour--an almost-Hinderer, the Viper Storm, designed by Rick and made in Maniago Italy. There've been some reports of poor quality with some of them, but mine came through from CollectorKnives just perfect in every way. It's a really nice mid-sized knife with a lot to be said for it, but it didn't scratch the same itch as a "real" Hinderer, so I passed it on to another BF member who really wanted a good specimen after having bad luck with a couple he'd bought. Worked out for both of us....
So, last, but not least is this late 2017 Hinderer purchase that I probably would never have considered had not one of our better-known members here offered, unsolicited, to lend me a Half Track to try out, telling me to treat it as my own, tweak it, sharpen it, whatever, and to return it whenever. A great kindness, though I was skeptical and sorta underwhelmed when I got it, but I tweaked the action, put a razor-sharp polished edge on it, and really grew to like the little guy. After two weeks I returned it and missed the knife right away. After scouring several dealers and the Exchange, I kept coming back to this one at USA Made Blade and picked it up at my PO late last week. Here it is on the job today alongside my recently acquired large 25 StarBenza. Really liking the Half Track more and more....
BTW, the StarBenza is sporting an etched Ti beehive bead from Maverick Workshop and the Half Track has an Ultem bead from BF member Inspiribomb.
So there's a year's worth of Hinderer action--kinda like a New Year's review. It's hard to pick a favorite, 'cause I like 'em all--even the couple I sold. But if I had to, had to pick just one--the envelope please....
Yeah I love my MP1 with its Hinderer South Sister bead, but the ones I have left all get carry and use and won't be going anywhere but in and outa my pocket.
