Let's see some knives made from repurposed materials

re-purposed 15n20 bandsaw steel at rc63-64 with a salvaged rock maple handle.

Here's a smaller EDC knife I forged out from an old K&F file. The style was inspired by some of the smaller knives that Don Fogg made in the past.

A picture for size reference:

Sorry, wanted to add one more shot that I liked ;) . The spine is polished and blued all the way around and rounded at the choil for comfort:

This Seax is the first knife or anything for that matter that i've ever forged. It was forged from an old open end wrench. The second thing I ever forged is the guard made from an old round file. The handle is recycled wood from a shipping crate and the pins are made from twisting together strands of solid core copper wire.

Some nice ironwood of course:

I've used quite a few of these figurines made in Mexico for the tourist trade, over the years. They work well for me as I tend to make smaller knives. Have a dolphin and a shark that need cutting up, on the workbench right now.

Kind of an ugly blast from the past, but here you go anyway:)

Made these from a couple of files about 20 years ago,the larger one was my first blade and the smaller was the third if I remember right. Try to remember I was a teenager who didn't understand cutting geometry yet ;) I had also just realized I could do my initials (WV) in file work, lol.

it's not a knife quite yet, but I repurposed the aluminum stanchion from a defective gas charged cartridge from a remote adjust seatpost for a mountain bike to make some pins. I had to turn it down some to get to the right diameter, which I did by clamping it into the chuck for my drill press and work it down with a file. Hopefully I'll have a complete knife to show soon!

Lorien Lorien - Are you making the knife from part of that cartridge, or just the pins? I look forward to seeing what you're making, I don't believe I've seen a knife from you in quite a few years. I kind of remember a WIP of a chopper (I think) you made, but I forget where to find it.

Tad Lynch Tad Lynch - That is sweet! Gorgeous handle and hamon! Love your work man. I can't say I've ever seen an integral forged from a file, or even a knife forged from a large square file. Just curious, was it a Nicholson? Great idea and thanks for sharing

hey Paul, I think you might be thinking of my 'oh no, not a knife' thread, or the subsequent 'oh no, not another knife' thread. Both threads died a tragic death when I refused to capitulate to photobucket's extortion racket. Yeah, it's been awhile since I finished a knife, and the one whose pins I'm making from this cartridge was started about 5 years ago! I plan to put a lot of projects to bed this winter, now that I have a shop in my shop, but this one's a priority because it is for someone in particular. A very patient someone.

I did recently make a quick, (for me) and dirty 'proof of concept' knife for CPK, which you can check out here, if you like

Paul,
Thanks, I'm not sure of the brand. It was an old one in rough shape. I have another one that might show a maker's mark. If so, I'll post. On the integral bolster part I left it near full size, but flattened it a bit to more of a rectangle, then softened the corners slightly with a bit of a facet.

Tad Lynch Tad Lynch , I hope you share the next one hear as well. I do like the way you faceted the handle to match the "square" bolster, I thought that was a neat touch.

Lorien Lorien Yes! Thaaat's what it was called, haha. I wasn't able to find the original thread, but I did a quick search and found the "oh no, not Another knife" thread. Most of the pics are still on that up until the point where you get it back from HT, but the pre-sharpened finished pics are still up there. That actually turned out really nice, especially considering it was all done hand files and sandpaper, and on a chuck of S30V ... I saw a post in that same thread where you were given some knifemaking books and misc supplies along with a smaller homemade grinder and was just wondering if that's what you're currently using to grind your knives with, or have you upgraded you shop even more since then?

These are some of my first knives, forged from a chopper blade(seen in first pic) off of our sugar cane harvester.

Terrible pic of a couple RR spike knives with 1080 bits forge welded that I made and donated to our school auction.

Karambit from a file, I pretty much hated making this.
