Lets see some wooden scales!

I mostly wanted to show off my wooden scales for my BK2 and BK9 since I'm really proud of the work I've done on them. One in Purple Heart and the other in Black Walnut. But then I thought that I'd also love to see other peoples wooden scales, since the Becker knives look so pretty dressed in wood.

Here are mine:

Lets see yours! Tell me a bit about them and how you did them yourself and any problems you ran into or something of the sort!

Well, I am here in the shop working late ,so I'll bite..

First of all, your grips turned out GREAT! It looks like that Purple Heart was not burned so badly after all.. ;)

IMHO,while the Large Beckers look great with wood pants--

The usages of the Tweeners seem to suit wood grips even better..

I just got this BK-14 from Panzertrooper a few weeks ago but it has quickly become my edc. This little dude gets more pocket time than all of my other knives combined.

Not my pic. I think this is the one Panzertrooper used.

Damn Doog, how many scales have you made? Those are great! How'd you do the hex holes?

Jim, those tweener scales are really cool.

How'd you do the hex holes?

I used foster bits to get a hole as close to the nut size as possible and used one of those really heavy duty table clamps to press them into the holes. Then I tighten the screws really tight to get them deeper into the holes.

Those are also the only two set of scales I've made.

Haha those are better than my first 2 attempts...How long does it take you to make a pair?

Total working time including the fine touches and sanding, about 6 hours each. (I think) About 3 working days each. Overall about a week or two due to decision making, item finding and slacking off. (I`d put that as an average for the two together)

The second one took far less time and was much more precise as I knew what I was doing. I`d make more scales but I don`t have any more knives to make them for :P Also I`m graduating and I don`t know where I can find a shop with the machines I used. (ban saw, belt sander, rotation sander) But I`m sure I could save up and find some way to get hobby versions of those tools to make more scales for more knives I may get if I begin to afford anything :P

Nice work! Love that brass hardware on the second knife

(since this pic was taken i've shortened the cocobolo handle, also i added hollow brass tubing to the lanyard holes on both)
The wood on the lower BK 2 was slightly brittle so i had some chipping problem drilling the rivet holes. Also there are some scratches on the finish but that's damage from rough usage.
Both these were post-Camillus-bankruptcy blade blanks bought online, one on ebay , one from BF's for sale forum. Wood bought on ebay as well.

I've modded the bk 11 a little recently as well, reshaping the lower butt end to make it more comfortable. Probably going to regrind the blade a bit making the bk 11 more like an elongated Izula.
None of the above are perfect but they are functional, lol.

There's some really great work in here! Chris (KFU) is sending me some Spalted Elm to make handles for my BK15. I can't wait to start that project, especially after seeing all of these.
