I just brought this old Flint XXX boning knife home from my grandmother's house.
It belonged to her father and is the only kitchen knife from her childhood that's still around today, I think it probably dates to the 50's.

If it were a pocket knife I'd probably retire it, but as a boning knife it's still got plenty of life left in it.

He sharpened it a lot but he sharpened it well, all I did was remove some minor rust on the blade, touch up the edge, and rub the handle down with some steel wool.
This knife is now ready to serve many more years in my kitchen.

Just plain AWESOME !
Enjoy :cool::thumbsup:

If I saw that at a yard sale, I would most likely be leaving with it in my pocket. :) It's still a handsome knife.
Thank you! My father wasn’t a “knife person” but he always had a knife in his pocket, and this was his work knife for a long time. Means a lot to me. (And I haven't seen handles like that anywhere else.)

Kind of a doubly non-Scandi sheath there. Cool stuff.

Thanks for your comment! The sheath is a strange partner for this knife. All I know about it is it was presented to my grandfather by a Norwegian colleague in that sheath. In fact, it looks very much like a gaucho sheath (gauchos are sort of cowboys in my country).

That's what I was thinking. A Patagonian belt hook and Anglo-American (probably other places too) belt slots.

This old scandi belonged to my grandfather, an archeologist who carried it on his field trips. The cork helmet was also part of his gear.

That is quite a treasure... It's also quite apparent that your grandfather knew full well how to care for that knife. It would be difficult for me to put that thing down... I'll also admit that if probably be wearing the cork helmet around the house while I was by myself too.

Thank you! I appreciate your words. With me, the knife had quite a few tours of barbecue with friends, and is now retired in a place of honor. Shall I share a secret? I sometimes put on the helmet, for sheer pleasure.
