Beautiful flint striker, Erdelyi! Did you make it yourself? Looks as if it began life as a file. No question about it; if the striker is made right, and the flint good quality, you can really throw a fountain of sparks with a single strike! I like the looks of a flint strike and good flint over a ferro rod, although the ferro rod wins out for weight savings.

I had a thought for a better scrapper for a ferro rod.... How about taking a round rat-tail file and making a semi-circular cutout in the scrapper? Instead of scratching one thin line, we could scratch a larger section of the rod on each stroke, throwing a LOT more sparks! Anyone try that?

Here are most of my kits....the others are in my trunk bag in the car with the esbit stoves and a mirrored kit in my wife's car's trunk enjoy

Just finished this sheath with a firesteel loop. Inspired by Nick Nack I made a firesteel with a spy capsule handle that holds a PJCB.

Fire Straw and some Fat-Wood, burned for almost 30 minutes:

Used a firesteel to start it, about 3 strikes to get the Fire Straw material to catch... On wet ground no less...

I was sitting at the computer looking at a old empty bic lighter. The striker works fine. All the gas leaked out. Was thinking of removing the bottom and putting fire straws and such inside. Then put it a leather case to cover the opened end. Should work.

I remember seeing some fellow's website a few years ago where he spoke about cutting down an old min-Bic, removing the metal fire protector and wrapping the flint wheel with some wire to hold it together, and having his own version of the 'QuickLight.' I think your idea of leaving the body on it makes more sense. You can store all sorts of tinder in there!

Take a quick look at this.... I was curious about the wood used for pencils so I did a quick Google search. At the PaperMate site, the company that makes most of the pencils used in the US, I found this;
"Premium wooden pencils are mass-produced from large blocks of incense-cedar wood.
The grain of incensed cedar wood is long and straight. This grain reduces friction during sharpening making the sharpening task quick and easy."

No wonder they work so well as tinder!!
