Let's see your good old basic fixed blades, Bowie's, Stickers, etc.

Jack, that Tod Cutler is a real cutie!
I call these two knives Bowie/Hunters, because they aren't long enough in the blade to be true Bowies, but they're too big to be true hunters. What they are, though, is a very impressive piece of American Cutlery! USA Schrade #171UH Pro-Hunter on top and a Western Westmark #701 on the bottom. Both made in the early 1970s.

That's definitely the same issue Jer :) Yeah, the sheath is pretty awful (I have 3 different models)!

Love my SwAK! It lives on my surf fishing belt & survived everything thrown at it.

I bought a bare blade from Ragnar, IJ I think, put a guard and stag handle on it and believed I had created the perfect field knife.

Sometime later this knife and the SwAK ended up side by side on the sharpening bench.

Great minds? :)

The SwAK sheath is a little fiddly but it’s all I could ask for in the marine environment.
I put an inexpensive carabiner thru the belt loop and it makes a decent dangler, not to mention the ease of getting it on and off the belt.

Speaking of bare blades (and I don't know why finished blades are called blanks, but that's just one of my crotchets), this handle feels better than it looks.

Really not bad at all, compared to the blue plywood sheath.
It is superior ancient plywood from a kitchen revamp at the old house.

I like the sportsman and imperial H7 , but always thought these Colonials were kind of stupid.
It's the bottle opener that I can't stand, it reminds me that the idea of incorporating a cap lifter into absolutely every possible is nothing new.

It's Tuesday!

I sometimes think we're a bit silly about patina around here, but there's something Kephart-homely about a food knife that's gone black with feeding you and yours.

Nicely said Jer :)

Thanks Jeff :) Two very handsome knives there  Would you say this Kaufman was in a similar style?

You did a great job there  One of my SwAKs lives in the bathroom these days, does duty opening soap packets and razor blades :D

An awful knife, I was given this MoD (Ministry of Defence) British Army survival knife today.
6mm thick, 7" blade with a very low sabre grind. The fibre handles are horrendous and aren't flush with the tang. The sheath is a bit of a joke, though at least it's actually leather. Weighs about 18oz.
This will only be kept for reference, I don't see myself using this.

In 1971 I was at the old SF Camp at Plei Djereng in the Central Highlands. The Recon Teams from CCC (Command and Control Central) SOG started to use our camp as a Launch Site. I had a Razor-Edge sharpening device and sharpened a bunch of their knives for them. One day a man showed up with oner of those MOD knives, pretty sure with a wooden handle. Took a long time and moved a lot of metal to get it sharp. After returning tho the states I bought one and it was no better than the first one. My good friend the late Chuck Karwan thought he blade might not even be tempered just case hardened. I do not know about that, but fully agree with Ryan on the caliber of this knife. John

Jack, I would say the Kaufman is a pure hunter/skinner, very similar to the old Marbles Woodcraft pattern. Assuming it's a more manageable sized blade than the two I posted.

It is Jeff, thanks :)

They are probably only useful as a digging tool/trowel, and your friend might have been right John, I have seen some terribly hit and miss HT in Sheffield, many of the cutlers were very ignorant about it, and didn't even care :(

Later back in the USA I bought a Jungle knife made by Wilkerson, the one with the plastic sword handle. It was a much better knife than the MOD one but suffered from a very thin, and poorly made sheath. I gave it to a man on my A-Team who did not have a fixed blade knife and we reinforced the sheath with lots of 100 MPH tape. Jack Black might know which knife I am talking about and have a photo of it. John

Condors have gone up, too. Duh, like everything.
Did you add the pre-ricasso hollow?
Yeah, alarmingly! No, the mod was done by a previous owner Jer. If I'd modded it, I think I'd have done it a bit differently, as the handle is a wee bit small for my large hands. Most likely, I wouldn't have bothered though! :D I have this big Condor Moonshiner too, it's cartoonishly big, but I thought it was a real bargain when I bought it
