Let's see your knives made out of files, tools, and other mystery steels.

Love the rough looking knives!

Here is my Morris Knives fixed blade from a file:

The only one I have is this one that I picked up in Banaue, Philippines...probably an old truck spring

from my understanding, these two kitchen knives were made by russian prisoners (communist russia) and sold to consumers.

Havnt changed the ones we use to plow for the town at my company in at least six years started six years ago)
Done a little more research on this, if the cutting edge is stamped "Mill Supply Inc." it is 1084 with a HT of r30. That would be great chopper iron, I'll have to keep an eye open for these. Most are of mild steel with a tungsten carbide coating or "carbide cementing" such as the cutting teeth on a backhoe bucket but then some are as-cast ductile iron which has a lot of other alloys in it for hardness but makes it useless for forging. AND it looks like the poly blades are going to put steel edges out of business. Cheaper and they don't rust in the brine solution being used.

very intresting, now I can't wait for the next snow storm to talk about this with the guys.

Bikertrash, I think we have knives made from the same tool steel! That knife in your picture does it keep it's edge like no other?

Here's my first 2 attempts at knife making..
The top one was a random scrap of steel I had found.. w/Mahogany handle
The bottom was an old Nicholson file..w/Tiger maple handle
Both have hand filed bevels....

You want your first knife to be made out of homemade scrap damascus! Aiming high! I like it!

Nice blades. I like that Morris one a lot. XJ, is that a patina on the blade, or did you get the pattern in another way? Looks very cool.

Randy your work never ceases to amaze me, absolutely beautiful and timeless classics:thumbup:

Although I'm not the recycling guru like you and Rick but I have some old 2" bandsaw blade I was thinking about giving a go, whatcha think??

Bought in Guatemala in the 1960's. IIRC it was said to have been made from a leaf spring:

Not technically a knife but possessing some of the parameters. This is a 200 year old ''flesher'' used to remove the meat\fat from a buffalo\deer,etc. hide. Found in the bush at an Indian camp close to a trade post. The iron was heated then beaten, probably with rocks. Then a file was used to put teeth on it, but age and time has corroded them badly. Basic processes sound a little familiar ? I still have not identified the flat iron bars original purpose. Considering that every scrap came at least 2000 miles by canoe, nothing was wasted, or brought unecessarily.

Here's the two I have done (only two I've ever done out of anything).
This one was from a file (and I decided I would never polish another one as long as I lived, lol)...

And this one was forged from a broken piece of a jack hammer bit (I was told it was O1 tool steel).

I've never even attempted to make a knife, so this thread is very interesting. I really like the "looks" of the primitive style knives here. If this gets enough posters this would make a great photo thread to keep adding to.

Another CF toy
