Let's see your Scout/Camp knives

RE: Schrade Imperial "SAKS"

Did a bit of browsing on the auction site. Found several variations (sellers descriptions)

Camper - Imperial, Ireland, date? (made for Kmart)
Matterhorn - Imperial, USA made 1979. (several listed)
Timberline - Imperial, Ireland, date? another Imperial, USA, date?
ISC Century (many styles) - Germany 1993- (1999?)

Seems Schrade did a lot of camper/SAK types over a fair period of time. Probably more will surface.

Rough Ryder IMO has generally done very well with the Classic Carbon II line. However... the screw driver is a bit soft on this and of bigger concern,
the cap lifter doesn't actually work because it won't fit over many (any?) caps. 😢

RR seems to be having a lot of design/production problems lately. First RR scout type had a stud style can opener that wouldn't; carbon II cap lifter doesn't work properly. List grows from the RR sub-forum: nail nicks not accessible; pull weight nail breakers; etc. :(

Scrteened Porch

I'm not sure what was replaced, but that is definitely a Victorinox shield (or a good copy). I think multiple tools, springs replaced. Vic nor Wenger never used a long nail nick screw driver/bottle opener. Excellent job of putting together multiple tools, etc.from different makers.

Am I misunderstanding your post? Or was the Schrade knife was replaced with a Vic knife? Sometimes I can be a little dense.

Thanks for posting the various makers.

That's what I meant.
Sometimes I can be pretty unclear.
The Vic is stamped Eisener on one side of the tang and Victorinox on the other.
The Schrade-Walden has a very nice corkscrew on it, which would not have interested Grampa much. I wonder if he broke the spring by mis-using the corkscrew.

Thanks for the clarification. Like I said, I'm a bit dense sometimes.

The Elsener/Victorinox stamp is fairly early I think - circa 1950's.
Does that fit with your dates of ownership?

Grampa obviously gave it some use before he died in 1965 at 78 years old. (He and Gramma were born in 1887, and were 14 when Queen Victoria died (still boggles my mind)).

Finally dug mine out. Tang stamp reads "Schrade-Walden-NY USA" on front "906-Stainless" on back, 3-1/2" closed, "birdseye" rivet pivot pins plus shackle, top layer of blades: spear, small clip, screwdriver/caplifter, hook style can opener, blades on back: awl, phillips screwdriver, plus what appears to be a flat beer can opener marked: P361-889, liners are stainless/ aluminum color, with a wrap-around black spacer layer to accommodate "beer can opener" has through pivot pin for awl & phillips. Scales are red and owner's (my father's) name has been factory stamped on pile-side scale Blades have been overly sharpened, shield is missing, both scales have cracks. Here's the back story: From 1944 through at least the 1970's, my father operated a ("traditional") hardware store in a village in Orange County, NY, same county in which Walden is located. Knife was a gift from one of his suppliers that (if memory is correct) was also in Orange County. I recall that the knife sat for years on his dresser and don't recall him ever carrying it. At least some of the sharpening and damage probably occurred subsequently. Hope this info. is helpful.

I have a pair of Western S-901 Scout/Camp knives, but I didn't carry one for long before I switched back to a SAK. The Westerns are gorgeous to look at, but they don't have anywhere near the precision and consistency of a SAK Pioneer. The awl catches on the brass liner when it closes; when the cap lifter/screwdriver is opened, it allows the knife blade to shift over into the cap lifter's closing path, which then hits (and flattens) the tip of the blade.

It's hard to beat a SAK for reliable, durable, no-worry performance! I have, and use a few! But I still prefer the old, early last Century aesthetic. Camillus, Schrade, Cattaraugus, Remington, Winchester, Empire etc. will always give me that warm, fuzzy feeling the early Scouts were so good at!! And every one has a slightly different character!!
Even when Schrade used "fibre" handles, replacing jigged bone, they were cool; to me!!

I agree, agree, agree.

One of my favorite non-SAK folders; unfortunately now discontinued. Like to have a Phillips on my EDCs, few modern brands beside Vic have a Phillips. I reshaped blade to a clip point and added bail.

It's a lot heavier in pocket than my beloved Tinker, so don't carry it a lot.
