Let's See Your (Traditional) Hammer Brand!

A "perfect" example of how drastically times have changed. (IMHO they ain't changed for the "better")
General Mills, Ford, and other big corporations gave employees a knife as a safety reward, at least into the 1990's.

When I delivered in the 20-teens to General Mills, Post, General Motors, Ford, Bendix, and other companies that previously awarded knives, they now pretty much have a ban on knives.

Only employees who actually need a knife in their job duties can have one on company property, and they can't use their own knife.
They are issued an automatic retracting blade box/utility knife at the start of their shift, that they have to turn in at the end of each shift.

We trucker's delivering or picking up are supposed to leave our knife/knives in our truck. (naturally, we kept our traditional knives loose in the bottom of our pockets) No knives are allowed on the shipping/receiving dock(s). "You don't need one there ..."
(yea .. right ... I had to cut Saran Wrap more than once on the shipping dock to remove a layer or two of boxes so the pallet would fift through the box door ... the inside box height may be 8 foot, but the door height is 7 foot 8 or so if you have a roll-up door... 7 foot 10 with swing doors ... plus you loose some inches picking it up wth the forklift or pallet jack ...)

The Hammerbrand mark reminds me of eating at my Grandma's. She had a set of their cutlery and the knives were marked. When I remarked on the neat mark she said the cutlery came from a family member who worked at the factory. The Newburgh NY branch. That cutlery is lost in time...

The Imperials are good knives, but the old NYKs are great!!!NY HJ M1.jpg

Came across this one today. It's part of an estate. I don't know much about Hammer Brand. I have an opportunity to buy it, but I'm not sure how high to go. Some of these have pretty high reserves on the bay, but I have no idea what they're actually fetching. According to the current owner, it was primarily used as a fishing knife (by her father) though it appears to be a skinner. Any info would be appreciated.

Not mine yet. Came across this at an estate sale today. It will be up for auction tomorrow as part of a lot. It's an automatic, but not the nicest knife in the bunch. I know nothing about the brand. Any info would be helpful, thanks.

1945-1955 according to this: View attachment 1726910
Well after Hammer Brand became an Imperial - Schrade brand in the early 1930's.
I don't have a clue on value. Have you checked the completed auctions on eBay? That will give you an idea of what they are actually selling for.
As you are no doubt aware, some folks are in fantasy land concerning what their _(item)_ is worth.
Does the auction house say it fires properly? That will have a major impact on the value.

Looks like shell construction with sheet celluloid on the handle. The lighting isn't the greatest, but it looks like the blade and backspring only have a patina, not damage from outgassing celluloid.

I could not resist this cheesy 1945-55 fishing knife. Found it by accident while nostalgically searching for a similar version by Schrade Walden.
Very solid lock-up and no blade play - very surprising. Never sharpened, and need it. Best $25 I've spent in ages.

Good deal!! While the NYK Hammer Brands were exquisite, these later shell-handled knives are interesting, and a good deal for a useable/collectible knife!!!!!
