Let's Talk About Sharpening Our Survive! Knives

This thing is the cats arse for a versatile take-along sharpener. Doesn't fit in a pocket (I mean it will, but not something I would want floating around in my pocket), but will absolutely be in every pack I take with me. It has magnets that hold the diamond plates on either side, and there is a gap between them that houses 2 broadhead wrench cut-outs as well as enough space to stash away some things - I think I'm going to put a "survival" fishing kit in there or perhaps a small oil dabber.

My WS field sharpener has served me well, too. I've never pulled the plates off and didn't realize there were broadhead wrenches made into it though. Thanks for that Cootshooter

Ah!!! I had the fine/coarse DMT Duosharp that I had my eye on in my amazon cart and it disappeared! I can't find that same combination for the price anywhere. It's like it ever existed on the site. I keep going back and forth with that and a cheaper diamond bench stone. I'm still planning on a Flexxx strop, regardless.

Ah crap! Hopefully another one will pop up. What size sharpener were you looking at?

Try StropMan strop. Pretty need package. Pretty spontaneous customer service.
I've heard a lot of good things about that brand, but Flexxx seems to be just as well liked... with free shipping!

It's 6x2 5/8 interrupted surface with 2 inches on one end that is uninterrupted. Can we link to amazon?

Stropping has worked very well with the stainless and 3v blades. The full convex ground blades are a little more tricky to get super sharp but that is the price you pay with a lot of steel supporting the edge. I have used a KO worksharp on my cheaper convex knives with great success, but have not tried them on my GSO's.

I have heard great stuff about Flexxx Strops. USA Made Blade carries them, and speaks highly of their quality. I trust what they say.

I just got my Stropman Big Boy strop. The quality of the leather is better than anything else I have used. I have only owned it for a short time, but so far I am impressed.

Silver Needle, once you get into stropping and see how it polishes the edge and is something you can do while watching football you will be hooked!

Something to look forward to!

We'll see how it goes. I'm hoping I find that I can preserve a lot of blade edge by just stropping and whip out the DMT for serious edge fixing.

Time for this sharpening noob to get stroppin'!

USA Made Blade is a forum supporter, right? I ordered Saturday and got an email saying I'd have my package in 3 to 4 days. I got it today... which is the very next business day... free shipping!

Nice needle! Which model did you go with!?

Thanks! It is the field strop. ManofSteel suggested I go bigger, so he's probably somewhere out east slowly shaking his head at me. It is smaller than I thought it would be, but it's way better than no strop. If I really get into it and find myself using it enough I can upgrade.

Silver Needle- your strop looks good to me. Just do yourself a favor and don't overload it with compound, if it gets a glaze look going that's probably to much.
I use a paint stick with a strip of old belt on each side for a field strop, it is way smaller and works fine for touch ups. There are lots of good videos to watch to get the hang of it and you really will see a big difference after a little time is put in.

Yup. USA Made Blade is a little knife shop in Salisbury, NC. A couple of good-ol-boys run it, and they only bring in hi-quality gear that is Made in the USA. The service you describe is nothing out of the ordinary for them, and they are always more than happy to answer questions via the forum or phone. There are a lot of good dealer on BladeForums. I think USA Made Blade is one of the best.

That looks like a really nice strop. I would have gone bigger, but bet you will like it and end up buying another larger one.

There's always a place somewhere for a small strop, I don't think you'll regret that one. Did they have the green compound, too?

I think Felxxx loads the strops with Bark River compound. It looks like Flexxx uses a great leather too. I like my Stroman, but that Flexxx looks good also.

Thanks, guys! The strop came with green on one side and black on the other.

If the edge is undamaged and can easily slice paper, how much time should I expect to spend on the strop? To get to hair shaving?
