Let's Talk About Sharpening Our Survive! Knives

Has anyone taken advantage of Survives sharpening service? I would like to send my 4.1 in for a fresh edge but haven't heard back. Safe to say they're probably crazy busy, just wondering if anybody's had any experience with the service.

Yes and I've had several that have been resharpened 3 and 4 times. It'll take some time but Guy does a GREAT job resharpening and if need be re-profiling or repairing the edge.

Good to know, I've just gotten a generic auto reply email back. I'll try again another day.

uh, you're a suvival guy and you can't sharpen a knife? something seems wrong with that picture?

Prepare to wait awhile for its return.
They truly sharpen up rather easy thou ..

I can put a factory edge back on it for you alot faster then sending it to them..or a nice polished edge.

Bobby, just as a matter of curiosity what do you charge (kind of ballpark range) and what is typically the turn around time?

Uh yuh I can sharpen a blade plenty fine, but uh just asked a question and uh survive offers this service and uhh why can't I ,"dude"

I think.... naaahhhh... I'm pretty sure I posted earlier in this thread.
If you're thinking of sending your S!k knife back in to be sharpened, consider this:
For the shipping you'll pay, you can pay for an Old Hickory knife off Amazon and a carborundum stone.
For the time you'll spend waiting for your knife to transit to S!K, wait for sharpening, and transit back, you can practice on the Old Hickory and your new carborundum stone until you can get dang near a razor edge, with no further refinement really needed.
And have time left over to actually sharpen your S!K knife (knives).
And now you've learned a new skill.

Now, understand, this comes from an old curmudgeon that would rather throw a knife away than not be able to sharpen it. Any knife. If I can't sharpen it, it is useless to me. But I'm just ornery that way. It isn't for everybody. But I ask those who would send theirs off to consider an alternative point of view. YMMV, and no offense taken if you tell me to go pound sand. Just offering up a suggestion.

Are you on the fb survive page? I'll message you on there if so...don't wanna advertise here.

Sorry Bobby, not a FB'er :(

My email is casinostocks at Yahoo, but like I had stated just a curiosity thing. I need to cut something first, anything, to even move an atom on this factory edge :D

Over the past 2+ years I learned to sharpen my own knives but to be frank I can't get them "Guy sharp". Though I might get a wicked edge sharpener and I bet I could get close.

Just a strop can get you shaving sharp easy. I use my strop every few days and my WE gen 2 pro a few times a year at most.

You'll get em beyond guy sharp honestly...he does a great job but can't compete with a slowly hand sharpened edge.

With the number of knives which you already own hailing from a multitude of different makers, I'm surprised to hear that you don't own one already!

Agree with you guys on this. I used to be so afraid of sharpening my knives but has since gone freehand sharpening with DMT diasharp diamond stones and Spyderco ultra fine ceramic. A strop helped finish up the edge to scary sharp and I am amazed at how easy it is to do this. You can then continue to strop it every time to maintain that wicked sharpness. It is meditative sharpening your own knives.

Amen, I watch a couple Youtube while I get setup to strop and finish up with some relaxing music, and before I know it I am ready for a nice sleep and I have another shaving sharp mirror polished knife. Occasionally I indulge in a little drink.

I know how to strop. It just took me about a year to do it correctly and I can get my knives shaving sharp. In that time that I was learning how to sharpen I sent a bunch of knives back to Guy to resharpen because I use my knives a lot and also because I ruined a few blade profiles trying to free hand sharpening. My 4.1, 5.1 and 7/7 got a lot of use and were victims of my first tries at diamond stone free hand sharpening. I told Guy about them and he just said to send them to him and he'll resharpen them for me.

Here's what I use:

This is my second one.
