The 110 is my favorite Buck and I think the 500 is a close second. I have dozens of 110 but only one 500. I started wondering why that is and I realized that it is because the 500 is mostly offered in plain old vanilla.

How about some blade upgrades, s30v, D2, s90v or whatever?Elk or ironwood maybe? Micarta would be a nice throwback even.

Am I the only one?

I know there are some variations out there but are there any with upgraded blade steel recently?

Very impressive, John, nice 500s. Thanks for showing them. Preston

Jeff, Yes-- up grades are around. Buck did a 500 w/ s30v steel and canvas micarta in the Heritage Series. About in 2008. Google on on the big auction
site. Plus, you can still find plenty of the early models around. The first 500's came out in 1979 w/ maroon micarta, a polished 440C blade & stainless frame. If you find one in very good shape Don't pass it up. As the Heritage knives are hard to come by. DM

That depends on your definition of recently, S30V 2008 green canvas Micarta and ATS-34 2007 Honey Bone have been done.

I am thinking.......if you want a special run of some production knife with upgraded materials, you might be ahead to convince a after market seller to order a few hundred from Buck. That's just business, Buck gets it's money, after market people are taking the risk on you buying it. That's why you see all the licensed seller surveys here, they are wanting to find out what you would buy.

I love the 500. I have a few of them and the fit and finish has been better on all of them that the 110’s and 112’s that I have bought. It is still my favorite model.

I prefer the 500 over the 112. As I like the 500's blade shape and it is thinner. Still, it's a 3" blade. With most guys that's all they need. DM

There is a BCCI member who displayed a fantastic collection of 500's at the Blade show in Atlanta. .I went 4 or 5 times from 2007 to 2014 . Every time I went I looked forward to seeing his beautiful displays. I spent hours checking out all the versions he had, even a carved wood model! If I had not committed to the 112 by then I would have gone with the 500 .It's a great balance of size and strength. .

Yes David I agree, most 112 guys don't realise the 500 and the 112 are the same size. The 500 is thinner, lighter, and the rounded edges make it a better pocket carry knife.

Yes, agreed. A thinner frame,-- thus more pocket friendly. Buck has also made subtle changes to the 500's blade in around 2000. Which I like.
Moving the belly more forward. DM

The Duke has always been my favorite knife, just a very sweet looker. I cant figger for the life of my why the smaller 500 series knives are available in custom shop but the duke isn't.

I also like the 500 better than the 112 overall, but I like the looks of the 112 better. If the 112 was as thin and light as the 500, I'd choose it.

What is your definition of upgrade? Is 440C an upgrade? The mother of pearl Chuck Buck commemorative was made with 440C. It was only sometime in the last few months that it was removed from Buck's website.
