Lets talk GEC!

So I did indeed end up ordering an H40 too, because I love this so much and want a bigger one too. What an unexpectedly great pattern.

I just bought this H10 to replace a 72 lockback I sold.

Let me say, don't sleep on this pattern. Like so many old knife designs, it's WAY more ergonomic than it looks.

I worried the large ricasso would put my hand too far away from the edge, but as you can see, it kind of gets swallowed up in the hand flesh that swells past the guard when gripped.

The balance point is just where you'd want it. It's very nimble. I keep wanting to throw it, because it feels like it would excel at that.

The sheath is really well done, and very attractive. Only nitpick is, the snap rubs against the CNC ridges every time the knife is drawn, making a high-pitched zeeeeeeep! noise, and leaving a trail of scratches on the pile side.

The blade is VERY thin behind the edge, though it thickens slightly at the tip and the base, causing the bevel to widen, narrow, and widen again. But the thickest part of the edge is still thinner than most.

It feels lovely, looks better in person than in photos, and as a sharpener, may I say bravo to the heat treatment, even by GEC standards. This thing whittles whittled hairs. It's burrowing sharp. Very crisp, loses the burr like a spy shaking a tail.

Get one of these while you still can. You won't regret it.

Had a great trade last week that allowed me to complete my GEC 2 blade Eureka Jack collection. Had to give up something really special, but I got something equally special in return.

We didn't realize until well into our negotiations that his Rosewood Galvanic etched 92 was a serial match to my stag!

Here's my JBF Champlin subset of my Eureka collection. Newest addition on the right.

Your post convinced me to take the plunge, and my H30 with antiqued cherry wood showed up today. I am very impressed with the looks and feel of this GEC offering, it is sharp enough out of the tube to use, but I cannot wait to see what it is capable of when I put it to the diamond stones. The blade is ground as you said, nice and thin behind the edge. I am very glad I pulled the trigger on this knife.

After seeing the picture of the rest of your collection I’m really happy for you that you were able to make that happen. It’s a great looking knife. Maybe the best in the collection.

Assuming it was heat treated in the same batch, hoooowee are you gonna enjoy sharpening it. My H40 is on the way now, and I'm gonna convex that one like a Hess.

Holy cats!! Did you try batoing it or something?

Indeed, I know it's a slicer. It's actually less delicate than my Hess in profile, so I'm used to the thiness.
Processing wood, but not chopping or batoning.
It was in a piece of pine with kind of twisted grain when I came to a knot. So I gave it a good yank and heard a crack. I thought it was the wood, I was wrong.
It's in the mail to GEC right now.

That must have been a sinking feeling!

Well done, Ryan! That's a cool accomplishment and the serial match is pretty special. Have you taken a shot of the whole array yet?

Very happy for you, Ryan. Don't tell me the serial numbers are also the pattern number in Neptune acrylic that you let go

Absolutely fantastic! And yes, we need an updated family pic!

I think those Galvanic etches are some of the best I've seen.
