Lets talk GEC!

Then of course there's concerns with losing it in the leafy ground or getting it soaked and not being able to properly care for it for a couple days.
It's not a newborn baby, it's a knife. We like these knives because they are literally made like the knives people used in the woods 100 years ago. Usually for more than a couple of days. I understand some collectors have their queens, however most if not all of us have at least one user and I can't think of a better place for a user knife than the woods.

Just trying to find the point of a canned chicken. A small fresh one at the store is like $6.
This was a fresh one that we got from just down the road last week that I smoked. A 7.5lb big boy.

We get our chickens locally as well. A kid and his parents usually put a bunch up once a year as a money maker for him. I think it’s related to an FFA project as well. You can order pretty much any size you want, all the way up to 10 pounds I believe .
Your smoked chicken is making me hungry, my wife is pregnant and won’t let me near my smoker ha. Unfortunately the smoked meat makes her nauseous.
Still hoping for a Tuscosa slipjoint or a Farm and Field Barlow.
The 83’s are really nice! A little too small for me to justify buying one second hand, but I’d love to see another run.

Then of course there's concerns with losing it in the leafy ground or getting it soaked and not being able to properly care for it for a couple days. Part of me wants to go for a more practical bright-colored Case in stainless, but another part of me acknowledges a 1095 GEC was made for this kind of use.

I mean let’s ignore the last line of my original quote for a second and just talk about why thinking about it could be legitimate.

A GEC is an expensive (Relatively speaking) knife, and hard to replace, so I think that warrants a little extra concern. The old Northfield Cutlery advertised you could whittle nails with their knives, but I won’t be doing that. I’ll save cutting cardboard for box cutters or my expendable SAK (LFP) If I must. If John Q. Neighbor asks for a knife, I hand them an expendable knife, because sure as the sun goes down they’ll be cutting wire with it, or some such edge destroying activity.

If I didn’t have the luxury of options, it wouldn’t be a concern- I’d just use a single GEC for everything I needed. And I would! ... except that I don’t have to.

All this and I’m still a guy who carries and uses GEC’s every day... so I think a little care isn’t out of the question. I’m sure many folks here know what I’m talking about.

My ‘73 Vette was meant to be driven, but driving it to and from work in the winter isn’t going to do anything to improve its longevity. Catch my drift?

A 73 Vette was a luxury in 73 when it was purchased. A pocket knife is a tool, having 1 or 2 nice knives IMO is not a luxury. Having 20? (Guilty :D)Might be. Anyway 2-3 days camping is hardly abuse, but if your edge can't hold up to cardboard without being sharpened that's a different conversation you and I will never agree on. So all good. ;)

The pleasure I get hearing a GEC blade zip through cardboard...Priceless! I will use them to cut a steak on a plate  they sharpen right back up easily enough. I've had them in my pockets while getting all sweaty from cycling and wet from rain, and didn't give them any aftercare...a little 400 grit wet N dry paper will knock the high spots off the corrosion and some oil brings them right back up to snuff. Of course, then there are all those shiny ones sitting in their tubes in my collection, the ones I am most fond of are the ones with some wear and tear though.

This makes a lot of sense to me.:thumbsup::cool: For over 50 years, I only had one knife (Colonial Forest-Master), and I'd use it for almost anything, anywhere (I did not always make the wisest choices about knife use, but my Forest-Master is not in too bad a shape for a knife from ~1960). For the past 6 years, I've had an ever-increasing number of knives (although very few GECs, since I tend to take a low-budget approach to knives), and am always looking for places to use them (mostly food prep and whittling, as it turns out).

Well one thing we can all agree on; GEC’s are enjoyable when being used. Whether or not the user will whittle a nail, use it to trim sand paper or only cut butter is completely dependent on the user’s willingness to have a dull blade or sharpen it.

At work if asked if I had a knife my answer might be “no”, based on what was getting cut and which knife was in my pocket. That being said I carry one of these two in no particular rotation most of the time. Both came to me from here, used and at really low BF prices compared to the secondary market inflation.

John, you mentioned you were down to a few GEC, curious about what made the cut?
What a great excuse for a group shot. :)
All the knives on the left were purchased, the ones on the right were Gifts or GAW prizes.
All the knives on the left have seen heavy use, the ones on the right have been used "lightly".
The knives on the left represent the patterns I find to be the best, the ones on the right are precious.
I do have one more GEC knife stashed away, but I plan to GAW that one in the near future.

Nice, I’ve got a similar 15 in ebony....also from a BF member. It would be tough to use the BF 17...I’ve carried my 19 but I’m twitchy about it.

All the Gift/GAW knives have been carried and used lightly.
I think every knife needs to be carried and used like the great tools they are.
The Bull Buster sits on my workbench and the Lambsfoot has been used quite a bit.
But nothing like the ones on the left, they get picked and used the most for lots of different chores.
