Lets talk GEC!

I would say it’s a case of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, no clue what’s going on internally but externally they seem fine. They are selling everything the make and it’s a rare exception to see anything stay on the shelf at the retailers.
Some of the exceptions confound me - there are still a few toothpicks at dealers, and I just don't get it. The rosewood toothpick became my EDC knife the minute it arrived - I love this knife. I guess I'm just weird, but I don't understand why these didn't sell out right away the way some other things have.

Too specific a taste maybe? I really liked the copperhead ones but it’s not my favorite blade shape (Turkish clip I think?) and I don’t care for rat tails so I was out, I think the 97s were held back due to the weak springs and maybe the size? The 19s are just a little small so again not as broad an audience but it’s not like anyone is sitting on a lot of any of these knives and they will all eventually sell.

I think they made a lot of 97’s, more than normal, maybe largest run ever?, but if you look, even these are nearly gone.

For some reason, the 15 Bail and Chain knives have been around forever. This makes no sense, since everyone loves 15’s, and you get a 15 plus the B&C?! Just as bizarre, and maybe as a joke, GEC says if you remove the bail and chain you void the warranty.... that is pretty wacky, since the b&c has nothing to do with the rest of the knife.

I once heard of a real bad hombre that would swap all the b&c’s on his 15 collection, always around midnight of a blood moon, and no one could ever prove his crimes. They say he is patiently waiting, like a wolf, to submit a warranty claim on one of these now out of warranty knives. They say it is the perfect crime.

I like to think of him as the DB Cooper of GEC knives.

I thought those 15s would sell like crazy with the hipsters but maybe they weren’t exclusive enough. Agreed though, it’s a great price for anyone looking to get a 15 that actually goes in the pocket. If the hole bothers you enough just get recovered in your choice of materials or buy one that’s already been recovered at a particular website.

Are traditional knives becoming a hipster thing also? I’m behind on things
I agree about some of these patterns remaining on shelves while others are completely inaccessible within a few minutes of being dropped.
They must have produced a large number of 15s, otherwise I can’t imagine why such a nice pattern is still available.

I totally agree, love the rosewood 12, it’s my fish knife.

Totally agree with this as well, in fact I have posted on this subject before. I have the bone and ebony and if I didn’t already have a OD green micarta 92 I would pick up that one as well. The hole isn’t an issue if you are using the knives. If the only reason you are buying GEC knives to “flip” them, then the holes are an issue, but more importantly, you are missing out on the joy of using a truly fine piece of cutlery.

I think one of the big factors in why there are still #15 B&C around is the significant cost difference between those and the regular 15s in that run. I remember when I got one of the regular 15s, it was one of the most economically priced GECs that I have ever bought - under 60 bucks, if I remember correctly. There was close to a 40 dollar increase in price once you added the B&C - that turned some folks off.

Personally, I don't like buying a knife that I would end up altering so that could be a factor for some as well. I carry a B&C 15 every time I go out - not because I use it but because it is there if I happen to forget my other cutting tools (very rare but has happened). The B&C 15 is like a belt - it provides a measure of security and I never forget to put one on.

That is a good point that I haven’t heard before. I knew it was more expensive, but I didn’t know it was that big of a difference. At that time, I probably would have felt the same. However in this market, anything south of 100 seems like a good deal.

....3 chickens, 5 gallons of peanut oil and 2 virgins

 Whaaaat???

That thing is fantastic! Top of the grail list.

I purchased a b&c #15 recently, promptly voided the warranty, and dropped it in my pocket. Its a great knife for a user, and in my eyes, probably my only chance to experience this pattern without going bankrupt on the secondary market.
Also just today ordered a #12 in copperhead ponycut bone. Had my eye on them for a while and figured it was now or never as they are becoming more scarce in the Northfield trim on dealer shelves20201129_084135_copy_612x816.jpg

I prize that knife VERY highly and sometimes I sleep w/ it since I traded off the 2 virgins and the peanut oil - BUT it just ain't the same or as rewarding! I added some thumbnails above just to torture you Nick! :D

I own both of those knives, I highly doubt you will be disappointed

Maybe this means we will get a short run of lady legs?

I know they’re joked about a lot, but I kind of liked the shadow-pattern French Kates.

Which brings up a question: Where do the onsie, twosie, twelvesie runs go?

 Smooth White Bone 86!? How do I get one of those?

Chanting and chicken sacrifices. Or maybe it was volcanos and virgins. Something like that :)

Hey, getting a 1-of-8 GEC is easy (when it’s ugly enough). ;) :D

2021 TC anyone? This may have already been brought up here somewhere, but I can’t find anything. Rumors are flying since Mike posted his statement on his early reserve page. 2021 already looking better than last year!
