Lets talk GEC!

He is a psychologist for sure. Recently acquired this beautiful knife and instead of enjoying it I go scrambling for a 15. I don't even care for 15s, I sold all my 15s except one.

That's a sweet one!

yeah but its that bottleneck that keeps people coming back. Throughout the past two years ive been seeing this happen to more and more of my hobbies. Looking for a rolex from an ad? fuggedaboutit! I have had this discussion with Bill in person every year I attended the rendezvous back then. "Hey Bill, uh single blade knives in almost every model sell great, how come you dont do more of em?" "Hey Bill, single blade 15s man, theyd sell great! how come you dont do more runs of those?" so on and so forth  Bill Howard knows what hes doing.
Yes, but every year, there are other people literally saying the opposite to Bill Howard; "enough of the 15s, especially single-blades, they're so boring." Just browse this thread. It's not fair to say Bill is intentionally trying to make these hard to get when there are so many other factors that play into what we observe.

Yep, it’s easy to forget that the forums represent only a portion of the market that GEC caters to. We can sometimes have a myopic view of the situation.

I'm not sure there's any games being played by GEC at all. Until the secondary prices cool off for GEC's its going to be difficult to attain them, which I think could exacerbated by lower production due to covid. Many of the knives I've bought in the last 3 years I could immediately sell for 50-100% profit and the ones I could at worse breakeven (hypothetically, Ive never sold one). Where else in the world can someone do that from their home computer or smartphone? The money is too easy for some people to not do it. I don't plan to sell any, and I'm by no means calling it a top to the market, but if I was holding a ton of knives for the purpose of selling them down the road, I would be dumping them right now. Some of secondary prices out there are very high relative to what they recently sold for at retail. I have seen this many times in the custom wood fishing lure market, one builder becomes "hot" and flippers move in, eventually the builder rightfully wants in on the action so charges more and more until buyers have had enough, and prices come back to earth. In this scenario it its not GEC, but some retailers that have started to charge quite a bit more (I honestly dont blame them), it could/should eventually reach a limit to what buyers will bare, and hopefully correct. I believe a few days ago one retailer tried charging north of 200 for the TC's and instead of being gone in 10 seconds they lasted atleast a few minutes. They sold, but the extra time tells me it had people thinking about what that knife is actually worth, and for flippers, how much profit was left.

Just looking around and it seems Case is doing the Copperhead pattern again. Honestly not a bad runner up for the next GEC we miss. I have a feeling I’d end up sending it to @jsdistin to get it up to the GEC quality...

seeing the rose gold TC was a surprise this morning. anyone know of other TC covers coming out? Or rumors of next pattern to release after the TCs?

Rose gold? What? I only know of the glitter gold and osage.

The osage looks fantastic. Sounds like there are very few of these being made though. I was pretty excited about a certain TC drop today until I saw they were trying to charge 200 a piece.

Which drop is that?

Regarding the prices, I'm pleased to see others have the same hard time that I do paying so much for the same product. It won't change anything- they'll all sell, but it does make me feel a little better that I'm not alone there.

"it is what it is" as they say. I'm going to save my money until supply and demand reaches some kind of equilibrium, and then I'm going to assess if the 1095 GEC current selection is worth whatever they're asking.

Looking at the production pictures, it looks like some "glitter gold" came out darker than others so they separated them and renamed the darker ones "rose gold." That's marketing genius right there.

I just saw that. Curious as to why they dropped they price, still out of the range I wanted to pay.
Hopefully it was just an error in the first email, but only they know for sure. $185 still seems high for what most GEC retailers were charging before COVID. However, I think that part of the economics could be getting driven by the small number of runs GEC is doing. It is easier to justify marking up 15-20 knives than 200-250, not to comment on whether or not one should do so.

As several Barlows are already bid up past double that price on ScalpErBay, I don't know that people really care what these cost, at this point. They'll pay it.
