Lets talk GEC!

Got to say the #89 coming up did not interest me one bit but the more I look at them the more I want one. I like the single spear point blade more than anything! That keyhole shield is way to good! Looking forward to seeing the other cover materials also!

It's a propeller shield. I think it looks good too . I think I would of liked the traditional shield.they use on stainless... the acorn, but the narrow propeller fits nicely.

I like this acrylic a lot, looks great on this frame and with the keyhole shield, but appears a number of these have that weird seam running through them. I was hoping that was limited to an anomaly with the 85 Dead Skunk and was not going to be the new acrylic norm.

I agree, major bummer GEC is using acrylic with (I think) bonded seams - again. Hope it's not an ongoing trend. Takes the fun out of acrylics appeal for me.

I wish I could disagree, but I really can't. I have one of the DSA #85s and while it IS a beautiful knife, I find myself wishing the seam wasn't in the pattern.

Yeah, I have a crown lifter in dead skunk . . . do not care about seam.

Really digging the next couple of offerings. Wanted a Bull Nose for some time, and red micarta does it for me. This would be a new regular carry knife if I can somehow manage to get one. But that fruit knife in those acrylic option , , , and stainless FTW!

Does anyone have a resource for production numbers of GEC "Special Factory Assemblies"? My understanding is that these SFAs are basically parts knives, sold in very limited numbers through the factory store and at the annual Rendezvous. These aren't listed in the normal production totals that GEC releases each year, I'm wondering if any attempt has been made to compile a list elsewhere?

I have one SFA in my personal collection. It's an improved trapper in sweet pickle jig bone. Has the special tube sticker but otherwise the only difference I can see from the standard Northfield run of that year is that the un-X-ld shield has been replaced with a houndstooth shield. Otherwise identical I believe. Absolutely fantastic knife, would love to know how many others are out there.

In an attempt to ward off any flaming I'll preemptively add:

1) Yes I used the search function here first. The only hits I could find had to do with this or that specific SFA knife, nothing about production totals.

2) I realize "call them and ask" is an obvious response. I can and will do that if I can't find this info elsewhere. But I feel like the folks at GEC must have better things to do than answer questions like mine all day long, so this is part of my due diligence before wasting their time.

Appreciate any info.

I don’t think you will be able to find this one broken out on the production totals. It is a shame that the tube top doesn’t say something like “1 of 12” like they tend to do for the last two or three years. If it is in the production totals, then these SFA 48’s were simply added into the total of Sweet Green Pickle 48’s (488217).

At first I thought this one might be a regular run 48 and that someone had accidentally switched the tube. However, obviously it is an SFA because the shield doesn’t match the regular run of Sweet Green Pickle 48’s.

That would bug me. I hope this was a fluke with the recent acrylic GEC purchased, and this isn't the new norm for acrylic covers.

Yes I have noticed (from other photos circulating online) that many tube caps on SFAs actually include the production info, 1 of 12 etc. I wish this one was similarly helpful, maybe it predates that approach. The GEC labeling system has certainly evolved over time. As I mentioned before the shield change is the only difference I can see from the normal run of these improved trappers. I really like houndstooth shields though, so it's a nice little bonus :)

beezwax beezwax , sometimes it can be very easy to find an SFA on the production schedule. For example I have a 35 Churchill in smooth emerald green bone that I bought in the store at the 2018 rendezvous. The tube tube on this one says it is 1 of 12 and it is found on the 2018 production schedule on the third line down on the first page.

I didn't realize those entries on the production sheets were SFAs! I had noticed that the Rendezvous knives were (sometimes?) included, like the 66 abalone in 2010 (labeled Rendezvous) or the pinewood Whaler (not labeled Rendezvous). But I didn't realize those very short run entries were the SFAs. It's extra confusing when you have to check subsequent sheets for late additions to prior year totals, like your 2017 stamped SFA on the 2018 sheet. Appreciate your help in making sense of these details!

So when you say sold through the factory store, does that mean an SFA might randomly show up on their own online store? Or would you only find these if you took a trip up there in person?

Well, I'm about 4,000 miles away from the factory store and have never had the chance to darken their doorway, so I can't speak from any direct personal experience sadly. But reading up on posts on the interwebs leads me to believe they may be had sometimes from the shop, in person (and certainly available from the shop, in person, during the annual Rendezvous). I don't think anything that exciting ever makes it to their online store.
