Lets talk GEC!

I was hoping some of those trappers would be of the "improved" variety. Regardless, it's nice to see the GEC ebony coming out black again. Some of the more recent stuff (yankee jacks, some 15s) had a "chocolate brown" that was really not appealing to me.

The lighter brown ebony is macassar and the dark black is gabon. I prefer the gabon as well although I do have a #15 with the macassar that has pretty good figure. I'm glad they went back to the gabon ebony too.

Thanks kj! I appreciate it. I thought I had that video memorized, lol. :)

The quality and luster of the undyed bone is really fantastic. It almost has the translucence of blonde cattle horn.

I see an array of interesting looking 48s on the website, including some Northfield Tortoise acrylics:thumbup: Wonder if these are singles?

Regards, Will

These are all short run 48's so get 'em if you can!

I recently received a GEC #99 farmer lock which I love. The two brass pins on the nitebrite scales stick out just so (a little too much). Not that big a deal, but anything I can do DIY to take care of it?

Thanks

Are the pins domed, rounded like a mushroom cap ? If so they should be proud. I do not have one of these so i don't know what type of brass pins were used.
kj

If they are proud then. This means they are capped. I would be very reluctant to go filing them down for fear of lossening the handle over time. Eventually, after filing down these caps of the pins, your handle will fall right off the liners! These particular pins are spun in.

Well I should have done my homework. I just got a 62 in peal LG and read in a thread that the LG stands for looking glass and it is an acrylic over a pearl veneer. This is fine, and while I still love the 62, I also read that daily pocket use with keys, coins, etc will scuff the acrylic layer causing the pearl look to severely dull. Have any of you guys carried pearl LG and had this happen? Any pics to show what normal use/pocket carry will do to it?

Thanks.

Brett, that knife my be a candidate for a nice pocket slip.

Anyone have any experience with GECs H20 hunting knives? I've been interested in getting a new hiking knife (on the cheap) and was interested on others thoughts on the knife.

Is that uncomfortable while using it or is this a cosmetic issue for you? If it's cosmetic, you have to remember that not only is the F&F their budget line, but that these knives are hand assembled and finished. They don't take the time to make sure every knife is perfectly polished and smoothed identically. Therefore, pins sometimes sit a little bit more proud on some knives more than other, along with other minor variances.

I hate to sound like a stick in the mud, but that pin doesn't look bad to me.... you should see the pins on the 77 sawcut barlows. Those sit on top of the covers with no smoothing at all. At any rate, I wouldn't mess with it. If you took off to much, your covers could fall off and you'd definitely void the warranty.

I think you're right... They aren't too bad. Better not try anything to screw it up.

Thanks

I like slightly proud pins, as long as they're not sharp-edged. And if they are, a needle file and some sandpaper will cure them.

My thoughts exactly. :D
Looks like I will be hitting Barry up for one his slips.

Brett,

You are correct about the #62 having LG covers. I think there were only a couple GEC's made with MOP covers, an early #25 maybe and the #09 Esquire? I do not have much experience pocketing any of the acrylics but perhaps a fine polishing cloth like the Sunshine Cloth is all that may be needed to keep it looking good. Sadly I do not have any first hand experience with those either but have been meaning to try one

Sorry if my ramblings failed to produce any real answers but take solace in the fact you have acquired a rare bird the one of who's likes we may not see again. I have a sibling to your knife along with the not so rare 2 blade cousin (1 of 7?), very nice knives!

I have been really tempted by a cousin of it as well that is wood and 1 of 7. My will grows weaker now that you mention it and bring it to mind. :D
I wish I had saved the thread I was referring to. It showed a couple others in the LG pearl as well. I don't know why I forgot this. I know I have read about LG before, oh well. I think the sunshine cloth and a pocket slip is the way to go. I just thought it might be beneficial to others if someone showed off a well used pearl LG so we could see how normal use ages it. Thanks for the help good sir.

WOW !!
I just got home and opened up my Northwoods Fremont Jack with elephant ivory. I am blown away. This is exceptional; all of it,
The ivory is creamy rich & warm, smooth and perfectly radiused, and just the right thickness to be strong but still more slender than bulky. Pins & shield are neatly sunk to flush depth & no gaps,
And the Wharncliffe blade is pinchable. Rock solid in fully open position.
It truly could not be made better. I do have a fair batch of full custom ivory handled single blade folders for comparison.
I have about 20 - 25 GEC folders and this is the best one, even though all are excellent.
Truly Top Notch folder here.
I'll try pics in the norning.
