Lets talk GEC!

In 2021 there was talk about GEC no longer doing SFOs, but with this new CK SFO, does that mean SFOs are now possible going forward for everyone?

I'd love to see another Waynorth & GEC collaboration.

From what I'm told, that SFO was sitting on the schedule from 2019 and SFO's suddenly were cancelled. They decided to slip this one in to fulfill that commitment. That said, who knows where the mentality on that is now. They just wanted to do their own thing at the time. They never said no more SFO's forever. I wouldn't be opposed to one occasionally. I like unique low production pieces. That doesn't mean they need to go back to doing one with almost every run.

I like SFOs and I REALLY like SFOs that showcase a very specific vision on the part of the one organizing said SFO. Charlie's efforts in this regard come to mind, as do the efforts of Roger and Ken at M&G. I enjoy Mike's efforts too as I believe on more than one occasion, he has furnished his own cover materials and we get to experience a knife that we otherwise would not have (i.e. Mesquite 23s, Maple Burl 85s, Olive Wood 77s, etc.).

That said though, with the number of SFOs that GEC was doing before they announced their pending abstinence, it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of them all. I'm not so sure I would want a return to that - I would love to see the occasional impactful SFO however, and I think we have some brilliant folks in our community who could see such things to fruition.

I'd like to see them reinstate Waynorth and M&G. Even though they are technically GEC SFO's, they were branded independently. I really miss Charlie's knives.

I recently purchased a GEC 23 Autumn bone. The pull leaves much to be desired. I prefer my Case Trapperlock. The GEC is difficult to open, and it closes like a bear trap. I have it in the 1/4 open position (2 days so far) and will chage to 3/4 in a few days. I've read the you can bend the spring? Are there any videos that show how to do this?

There have been a couple club/forum knives since then, plus the TC's from last year and the CK this year. It definitely seems like theyre just being more choosey with who they do SFOs with now (yes i know the CK run was supposedly for 2019).

You can also use a small jewelers file to round the corners on the tang.

The 23 I have has the strongest pull of any GEC I own save for the secondary blade on the 46 whaler that i dont even bother attempting to open. I've left blades in quarter/3/4 position for quite a while and I've never noticed it making a difference. My 23 is a liner lock so not sure what the need was for such a strong pull, I wish my 97 and 23s could swap spring strength!

Have you tried flushing it real well and oiling it? That could help a bit but they do have a strong pull.

Mine is a liner lock as well. Good to know this has a strong pull. I have a 74 arriving today and I'll compare.
