Lets talk GEC!

Copperhead Jigged Bone describes the color of the bone on the 811313 Abilene Stock knife because the People that cut the bone, jigged the bone, dyed the bone and built the knife named it that.
rma100, do you know this or assume it ?
The majority of manufacturers gave up naming their own products, colors, scents, etc well over 50 years ago. They employ the services of professional marketing agencies to come up with the slogans they use and the words to describe a color or scent, etc. Picking the 'right' words means the difference between success (lots of sales) and failure (little consumer interest) even though the product is the same.
"Ford Built Tough" probably cost Ford millions of dollars, but smaller manufacturers can employ the services of a marketing agency for much less money, like a few thousand $.
Maybe GEC does create the names they use 'in house' (although this still does not make "Copperhead Jigged Bone" self explanatory) but they would be the exception among manufacturers.

I know it for a fact. I have a very close relationship with Great Eastern Cutlery. I know Bill Howard, the owner, Personally. I talk to the Factory Rep at least 3 times a week. I work Outdoor Shows with Factory Reps and visit the Factory at least once a year. Besides which, the name "Copperhead Jig Bone", is printed right on the picture from their website that I posted. Look at "Handle Type"! Do some homework, jeez!

O.K. i accept that you do know for a fact that GEC thinks up the names they use 'in house'.
I think you are misunderstanding my query re "Copperhead Jigged Bone". Usually a descriptive name is picked because it has some relationship to the thing being described. For example "Copperhead" for a certain knife pattern was supposedly chosen because the flare of the bolster somewhat resembles the expanded head of a Copperhead snake.
I cannot see any relationship between GEC's use of these words and the jigged bone it refers to. Maybe they just picked this name because they liked it.

This is exactly what they did and what they do. I asked Chris, their main rep, about their use of kirinite handle material and the associated names. She told me that they re-name it. Kirinite is a trade name for a specific type of acrylic and they name all of their colors. In the last run of the 63 mako, they used it on the Templars. GEC renamed 'toxic green' to 'kryptonite' and 'patriot' became 'shark bite'. They also dropped the 'kirinite' moniker and just called it acrylic. On the Grinling whittlers that just came out, they have a totally different acrylic that they're calling 'kryptonite'. They can call it whatever they want I suppose. You and I both know that the standard 'copperhead' is a style of bolster, but GEC does what they want.

One of the things I love about GEC is that they fabricate virtually everything they use and I do like the fact that they make up their own names, even if it doesn't always make sense. I think the use of copperhead to describe some handle colors is ok. They do have a sort of copper tone look to them.

I don't care who named it. There are an infinite number of words out there that can be chosen to describe the coloration of that bone. To use a name that's already an established knife term is stupid. It can only lead to confusion. As soon as you say the word copperhead I'm picturing a bolster like the ones draggat posted. Calling the 81 a copperhead stockman, when in fact it's not a copperhead stockman but a stockman with copperhead dyed bone is a simple mistake to make. Of course they can choose to call things whatever they want, but common sense says that it would be wise to choose names that aren't already established knife terms. It's akin to naming a dye barehead and then saying that a barehead #15 with an endcap is self-explanatory.

I think GEC is referring to the color of the bone as copperhead color. If you've ever seen a copperhead in the woods it has close to the same color.

I have a feeling the folks as GEC sit around on Monday morning, drink coffee, read BF and laugh until it hurts. I would if I were them.

GEC should seriously consider getting their own manufacturer's forum here on BF. I think it would do really well!

And you are absolutely right!!!

That's good information right there. Knowing that a company that I regularly do business with holds enough contempt for me to sit and mock my ideas and thoughts will certainly affect my future buying decisions. Thank you for sharing that.

Haha I don't care how much they laugh as long as they keep putting out knives like this!uploadfromtaptalk1427038429509.jpg

Please don't get too upset. I prefer to think they're laughing with us, not at us.

Good to hear about the sitting around and having fun, but the names show such imagination that i wonder if coffee is the only 'refreshment'. Like since we're talkin' names and slogans: "this Bud's for you".

Nah, I don't really believe that any of this is that serious. An in depth discussion about the naming of a specific bone color is pretty out there to begin with. I used to work in the paint industry and we always got a kick out of the fact that somebody had to sit and come up with 800 different names for the different shades of brown. You'd read some of them and just know that whoever was coming up with them had checked out and was just writing down whatever popped into their head first.

I have had nothing but positive experiences in my interactions with GEC and have no reason to believe that they don't take their customer's opinions into serious consideration.

Yup, the folks at GEC are great!

You have to be able to laugh at yourself sometimes. Have to admit, we post some ridiculous things sometimes, myself included!
