Lets talk GEC!

Is the pivot pin/washer system used on the #71 a Birds Eye pivot John?

As far as I understand it, it is.

It is. I've done a few slim modifications on the 71s and I accidentally sanded too far on a pivot collar and it popped off. The pin itself is the only part that is holding the pivot in place. The collar is just held in place by the peening or pressing of the pin at assembly (from what I can tell).

For me, with camping knives for example, I pry by 'twisting' the knife not using the pivot as a lever. That feels more solid than just pushing down on the knife to actually pry in the weakest axis of the knife.

I've never had issues with knives breaking or bending, given the minimal hard use I put on the folding knives.

Oh, I think that pivot pin/washer is going to give before the scoop of the cap lifter gives. I'm not being critical of the knife here - just looking at it from a prying view/thought. I think the knife will be quite a hit.

I'd be surprised if the collar popped off unless the type of prying being done is excessive (isn't that why all those pry bars are being marketed, after all?). Certainly not from prying off bottle caps since the spring is bearing the load in that direction. The scoop angle has been an issue on previous cap lifters GEC has made, if I recall correctly.

I just think the tip or the scoop will give before the pivot on a cross knife pry. I certainly will not be testing my theory any time soon. Although we get reports of broken blades all the time, we also get reports of blade wobble too. It will remain a mystery for now.

The only prying I plan on doing with mine shouldn’t put any stress on the pivot. 😉🍺

Yes, they make pry bars but there are some that will use a knife blade no matter the type - , cap lifter, clip, spey, sheepfoot, whatever to pry when nothing else is available. That's what I'm talking about. Not using it to pry a bottle cap off a bottle for what it's intended to do. I'm talking about sticking that screwdriver part of the blade and prying or twisting at a nail, screw, or whatever to remove it. In other words, abusing the blade - using it for what it's not intended to do. Further, if you remove the washer off the pin no matter how its done, that pivot is weakened. The knife might not fall apart but it is definitely weakened.

It was just a thought. Not an invitation to get in a peeing contest.

I feel like the farm & fields have more robust pivot pins than 'other' traditionals...at least it looks/feels like so. Hopefully, it will be up to the task!

You brought up a thought to a knife forum, where discuss knives. We are discussing, kind of the point of the site. No one is pissing. As a matter of fact this is "the leading edge of knife discussion", no other bush league knife discussion sites are talking about this yet, it will be days or weeks before they catch up to this.

Reading through the pages, earlier I saw this comment regarding the 'End of Hall' picture:
As the to the longhorns, I think they are just in the batters box - not associated with the saloon scene (I don't think).

Does that mean there's room for speculation on the knife following the 71 Sudbuster? For example, maybe a 21 Bullbuster?
*EDIT: More baseless speculation - perhaps a #35 3-bladed Calf Pen Jack?

I'm sure these new caplifters will be a hit, but I prefer my beverages from an aluminum can, never had a need for a caplifter. Finally a run that won't make me sad to miss. Go get 'em folks, good luck for those on the hunt

Good looking knife that.
Well to be honest, I was a little disappointed when they announced the 71. I was hoping for some version of a stockman/cattle knife. When I saw the picture of "what's down the hall" I saw the bull sitting there with the guy with the giant nose, and it just screamed bullnose to me. A day or 2 later the 71's appeared. I know they have a strong following and are a great working knife for the money, just not my cup of tea. I am going to be selling a few GEC's (mostly doubles)very soon and the 71's will be included. Oh well, we'll see what pops up next.

I was referring to the 65 in the quoted post.
