Lets talk GEC!

Baby oil is just mineral oil too isn't it? Never used the Victrinox stuff, might give it a try.
Possibly, but baby oil tends to have other things in, like perfume, and is not designed for the lubrication of metals. Victorinox oil is reasonably cheap and lasts for a long time. I would not use it to lubricate humans :)

My part of EU you can't buy mineral oil anymore, nobody uses it as laxative (not enough Pharma profits ) Baby Oil is essentially mineral but as others have said, it contains all manner of fragrances and extracts-found it gums up knives actually. Saw some Victorinox oil on a Bay 50€ plus 26 postage:eek: street drugs could be cheaper!

Using Mobil 0-20W just now, ultra thin but not food safe.

on Hagglezon that searches all the european amazon sites, it comes out at under 6 Euros

Think it fair to say that GEC has been influenced by Winchester Black Box to an extent: 29, 33. 68 models have their counterparts. So what I'd like to see is them making a Medium Stockman on this BB from 1987. It has many virtues: low riding but decent sized blades, commanding snap W&T, semi-sunk joints and the Bone isn't bad.....just like GEC to make it all steel construction-which they do so well.

That is one nice looking knife!! And I agree, that would make for a great GEC run!

This is not surprising as Bill Howard CEO of GEC (found 2006), was at the time in charge at Queen when the Black Box Winchesters were made.
the Winchester black box edition is comparable to the quality of the GEC knives and sometimes even has a nicer jigging of the handles imho.

it is said that Bill have said that he based the GEC #29 Humpback stockyard Whittler pattern on the Winchester 3904 he had done years earlier, when he was
in charge at Queen.

I did not know all of this! Great to learn more about how things came to be!! Thank you for all of this information!

Amen to that. How does that compare to the Case 18 Stockman which to me is a perfect size.

Ballistol is said to be safe to consume… but you have to deal with the smell ;)

I just get mineral oil off of Amazon here in the States (current price is 12oz for 15 bucks and that size has lasted me over 3 years).

I had it prior to getting into knives just to maintain my cutting boards and other unfinished wooden accessories (like the accent bits on my coffee grinder, chefs knives with cheap unfinished wooden handles I bought before I knew better). The fact it happened to also work for maintaining slipjoint knives was neat... that being said, I did find a spot of rust on my designated fruit knife / 71 so I should do a better job of using the things I have.

Along similar lines I learned about Renaissance Wax from these forums and while I don't find myself often using it despite getting a tin, the nerd in me appreciated it existed.

JoKr JoKr wow that winchester 2921 looks great, thanks for the pics.

I've been looking through GEC's archives but haven't had much luck - would anyone know offhand if GEC has made a coffin jack? I was unexpected to find how much I liked the eureka jack shape and now I find myself straying from the purity of a single blade... the recent 35s, 38s, and 39s all great but now my brain is fixated on the pattern I didn't get my hands on when I could.

edit: nevermind, there happened to be a listing for an 87 winchester in bone so that'll tide me over. frankly i'm amazed i lasted 14 days into the new year, I'm really making great strides at managing my impulsiveness.

Anyone happen to know what's the average answer time from GEC? Emailed them a few days ago and so far only crickets.

Last time I reached out, I'd say maybe a week? But they're a small company (I assume) and probably working through a holiday backlog so turnaround might be a bit slower than usual for emails. I remember the days when I used to work for a family-run company and kind of project that in my head to be honest.

That's most likely the case. Just worried that maybe it got into spam or something. I'll wait then.

No coffin jack …yet.

They did make a coke bottle (#97 Allegheny) which is similar in overall look, and a mini coke bottle (#06 Pemberton) which may float your boat, but they’re not Coffin Jacks.

weirdly that's a relief! Just means something to keep an eye out for in the future. The first GECs that really caught my eye when I was looking at an alternative to a benchmade crooked river were the ancient TC Barlows - the heartbreak when I learned that they weren't just simply out of stock is hard to laugh at even today ... to be naive, right? Jokes aside, its cool how much you learn trying to track down a shape you think looks neat thanks.
