Lets talk GEC!

The old English beaver.

Very old, seeing as we'd wiped out the last English beaver in the 16th Century - perhaps there were a few oldies on the Mayflower who still remembered them?

To be fair, a few were reintroduced to the county of Kent back in 2002, and some more in other locations in the years since.

But during the Golden Age of Sheffield Cutlery? Zilch

Old Sheffield jack, English jack... Next must be a UK pen knife?

Joking!

Speaking seriously, why is it called English jack? And haven't they usually made such combination of jigged cherry and beaver shield for a particular club?

Old Sheffield is just a name that GEC wanted to use. English Jack is an actual pattern or category of knife.IMG_20230301_161015_(1080_x_1080_pixel).jpg
Yes they are making the 87 as the OKCA club knife, and yes they get the beaver shield and often jigged cherry covers. GEC typical makes the club knife as a sub set of a general run.

It was fun to line up the various bolsters that GEC has incorporated. Added a new one to my set with the latest 25.

Does GEC have something against sheepsfoot blades as the main lately? After this next run I'd love to see a single blade barlow with a sheepsfoot. Or even better a single blade lamb foot.
I would find it surprising if GEC did another lambsfoot. I was very surprised when they did it a second time actually. Anyway they have already made one at Charlie's request and I'm sure they have many other projects that they want to explore.

You can never have too many lamb foot knives. It seems like everything lately is either a clip or spear blade main.

If I’m not mistaken the recent #88 has a lambfoot blade.
It did Dan, that was the surprise I was referring to.

I would love to see the #87 English Jack with a sheepsfoot main blade with a pen secondary.
That would be a mighty sheepsfoot. I think the pen on the 87 resembles the 78 pen. I have reached out to confirm. The 78 pen blade could be a main on smaller frames, I find it to be very useful, it's one of my favorites.
