Lets talk GEC!

8 is said to be Muskrat clip, which I think is the case here, so everything seems to be correct.

Charlie, Alex is correct, GEC is calling that a muskrat clip. My favorite Cuban Stockman pattern is the #5383xx, again with the muskrat clip main, although an even narrower one than is in the Stallion. It seems to me that if the clipped portion of the blade is longer than the straight spine portion, then it's a muskrat clip.

Thanks for the clarification, Alex and Jeff!!
It had me fooled because that Stallion blade is such a "wide" muskrat!!

Edit: Not sure if they are a paid dealer anymore but an awesome dealer just dropped mammoth 54s as a surprise for the 12 Days of Christmas (sold out)

I almost went for it, had one in my cart and then backed out before checkout. I think I just realized that I have no use for what seems to me to be purely a collector's piece.

Just couldn't see myself using it the way I like to use a knife. Hope everyone who went for it and got one enjoys them. One of the things that attracted me to GEC in the first place was that the knives seemed like honest working tools made well and nice looking to boot - but practical above all else.

I understand the aesthetic appeal of Mammoth (love my Mammoth Lamb!) but, especially with crosscut sections, I think I'd spend more time trying to protect it from the elements than doing any honest work. I got enough stuff like that in my life. 🤷

Good reasoning birdsbeaks birdsbeaks , I think it's good for us to evaluate what makes a good addition to our personal collection and what we should not purchase or sell. Been doing a lot of refocusing myself.

That said, a big crosscut mammoth knife checks too many boxes for me to resist, even if it just goes in the rarely carried grouping of knives.

I am just hoping the one I end up with looks anything like the stock photos. That would be amazing.

You're correct. Too many times, I simply bought because something was available, and then upon receipt wondered why I had wanted it. Compounding the issue is the fact that I dislike selling knives - I seem to only enjoy buying them.

One of my primary rationalizations for buying new knives is their functionality - otherwise, I might as well just get into those fancy Russian Easter eggs. 🤣

The antique yellow sawcut 77s are dark brown it can appear black on some of the darker models. It is most likely a burnt ochre of some sort that is leaving a yellow stain on the bone.

It appears to me that the top knife is just light blue on the polished edges where on the bottom knives there is a definite red in the dye. My guess, purely a guess is they sorted the lighter blue slabs where the dye did not take and put them in some red dye.
You are absolutely correct, I see. Good eye! And good color knowledge too. Thank you for the explanation!

Oh, that's a good and clear way to explain the muskrat clip, nice!
It had me fooled
A knife had you, sir, fooled? Nah, can't be, uh-uh, impossible.

That's why I think hard and try to pick one option of the batch only. Mostly, I have no regrets. Mostly... :) Actually, quite the opposite thing happened a few times: I was in great uncertainty, but decided to buy, and upon it's arrival I grabbed it in my hand and I thought "Wow! I am so glad I got it, awesome knife, perfection!". Great feeling.

I was able to get one of these mammoth 54s
Same. They're so gorgeous. I hope I get one of the darker brown ones like the bottom two, in the group picture, but I can't say I'd be disappointed with the lighter one. The combo of the crosscut mammoth with the acorn shield was just too much to resist. I guess there were 100 of these.
