Lets talk GEC!

Totally off topic from the current discussion...but I'm on the hunt for my next GEC. I see "factory seconds" for some listings, but I'm not sure what it means. Is it a product defect? Figured this is a legit place to post this question.

The seconds usually have a small cosmetic defect that won't effect the knife's function. They make great carry knives!

EDC's are marked with a "S" for "S"tore model. Seconds are not generally sold to the public, but some SFO's do show up; they are marked with a "2" and may have bigger issues.

I purchased a factory second (Bloodwood Beer Scout) and have studied the knife to try and find the imperfection and cant find anything wrong with it.

It actually is flawless in my opinion!

I bet, sometime in the far flung future, we'll discover that those factory seconds are some of the rarest GECs.

I just picked up a new T. K. Cuban Pen, on the 53 frame. Beautiful knife, beautiful cocobolo, but...... The spring is not flush when the pen blade is open, it's recessed in a bit. Am I being too picky? The knife seems to function flawlessly otherwise. Worth sending in to GEC?

I don't know if you are being "too picky" or not, but I can tell you that would bother me.

I think expecting flush at the "half-stop" is being too picky, but I really do expect the springs to be flush when open or closed. I would probably contact the dealer before GEC, maybe you could get it exchanged. That would certainly be faster than waiting for repair, I would imagine.

I wouldn't, because it wouldn't bother me, but it's really up to you.

So the "snakeskin" they had listed for the upcoming vipers turned out to be acrylic.

Here's what they're calling snakeskin acrylic. From the GEC "What's Happening?" page:

The picture is mis-labeled on the GEC website. That is Natural Micarta. I heard the Snakeskin is delayed and hasn't been received at the Factory yet.

This one today for me

Also, if you are in central Texas please check out my signature. Meeting up with BF guys this weekend and would love to have some traditional folks there.

That would very much bother me if it impacts on the handling. When a knife has a raised or badly sunk spring on open and my thumb can feel it I just can't stand it. This being a large Penknife with single-spring would be rather hard to fix I suspect, needs a rebuild. Obviously, if that spring is badly sunk/raised it should not have been let out. But, some people don't seem to mind. I particularly like single-spring 2 blade patterns, my Conductors and White Owls are fine in this respect, so too the current Forum Knife. Even lowlier knives such as CASE's Pens or RR patters are excellently finished on the spring/blades. Mark of quality finish I feel.

On another note, that Snakeskin acrylic is really interesting me even if the pattern doesn't. If it turns out well I hope GED will offer it on other patterns too, awaiting eagerly.

Regards,

Will

Posting these videos for members who may not have seen them before. Bill Howard gives Crawford County Outdoors a tour of Great Eastern Cutlery.

I watch them periodically just to remind myself what goes into the knives we love so well.
