Lets talk GEC!

There's a picture of a barrel floating in the doorway at the end of a hall on GEC's site. What do you guys make of this? My first thought is it's a keg or something related to the Beerscouts, but I thought we wouldn't see those till October ish?

Possibly wine/beer/whiskey or other Casks used as a cover material, like Bokers Beer Barrel series. It also could very well be related to the Beerscouts or maybe the rendezvous. I know that the inside of red wine barrels makes absolutely amazing furniture when finished because of the red/purple staining that accours in conjunction with the various types of oak. But than again it could be anything...

Good one, Jake! :D:D
(I dropped a lot of quarters on "Donkey Kong" in the video arcades back in the day.)

Just to add information to the posts above, copied from KSF newsletter.

"As you likely know, our Northwoods line is a very popular brand of pocket knife. We have had some serious supply issues. Our main supplier (Great Eastern Cutlery), because they are having trouble keeping up with their own knives, has had to cut us back to just 3 runs of knives this year.

That sent us on a quest to find another manufacturer who could meet our high expectations. We found two. We are working with them to produce some traditional pocket knives at a level you've never seen in a production knife. I can't wait to show you.

We keep hearing a timeframe for the first run, but it keeps getting pushed off. Hopefully soon. They will be worth the wait."

I read that with interest this morning as well and started all the random ruminations...

- Three GEC runs, and isn't the Ezky Zulu the first one so far, so two more GEC NW models at some point this year?
- Two other manufacturers chosen...I seem to remember something about another Fremont offering this year and of course the IRJ. So that leaves two more model offerings, maybe?
- One of KSF's recent emails mentioned another coming "secret" knife of high quality for a production knife.
- What two manufacturers might they have contracted with? Queen? Been there, done that and it didn't seem to work out. Tuna Valley? Would definitely have the quality angle, and they would have access to Queen's super steel. Case? Would they be willing to collaborate on a NW model?
Interesting times ahead and if the EZ is any indication, KSF will be offering some beautiful knives for us!

When I first got interested in GEC, I didn't follow the forum much and I missed out on a lot of the barlows. When I finally did take notice of them, I missed one run of them that I really wished I hadn't. I am not willing to pay the insanely inflated prices, so I still don't have the Stews Blade in red sawcut. I'm also not very quick on the exchange, and that's not going to change. I've found other avenues to try to acquire what I want. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. As for the painstaking work.... Yes, I did a lot of research, asked a few questions here and there and finally got what I wanted.

To the newbies, the info is already all right here in front of you. You just need to take a little time and dig into the threads here, and dig into GEC's website. It really is right in front of your face. You just need to work for it a little!

I know the Tuna Valley line is getting ready to start making their "timekeeper" series for every pattern made from here on out. These have the filework blades and springs, etched bolsters, and unique resin handles with pocketwatch gears within. Previously the timekeeper series were only made in runs of 10 or 8. The Daniels said that it seemed popular enough to do full production runs of 25 now, same as their ivory and buffalo horn quantities. KSF is already a Tuna dealer, so that could be one that they are speaking of.

I agree 100% that a new collector can get a TC with just a little research. I just started collecting knives last summer and just got into slip joints before Christmas. I too was lost as to how to snag a TC Barlow without paying a fortune for it. Once a finally bought my first GEC. I mentioned my problem to the Dealer I was buying from. He told me exactly what has been mentioned here a few times. That Charlie will be letting people know by way of the Blade forums. That I should fallow them closely if I want to get in on the early heads up. It worked perfectly. I was able to reserve two #14 TC Barlows with no real trouble at all. Not to mention I've fround a whole community of knife nuts to laugh with and learn from. ;)

Rookie82...no offense, but what does Tuna Valley have to do with GEC other than that Bill Howard used to work for Queen? This is Lets Talk GEC!

The thrill of the chase :D

That's absolutely part of it!

It's a lot like fishing to me :)... really wouldn't be as much fun if I knew I was gonna catch a fish every time I put a line in the water.

Probably because TV was mentioned in the post above your earlier one. A discussion of GEC and two additional source manufacturers for Northwoods. It's all good, man.

Thats why its called "fishing" and not "catching":D

Exactly Philllll Im always excited to see a new knife waiting for me in my mailbox. However my pulse runs a bit quicker and my grins a little wider when it's a knife I've worked a little to get.:D

Maybe it's the new #07 Spooky Hallway of Doom

Will it have a bail made of rattling chain links and a mysterious blade that no one ever opens?
Or perhaps the blades will change places for no reason?

Oops...I think I led us off topic. I was talking about GEC limiting Northwoods runs and starting mentioning what other manufacturers KSF might be alluding to. 😊

No worries at all. I for one enjoyed the speculation. That's what these forums are all about, sharing of ideas. If you look back through the history of this thread other manufacturers are brought up countless times.
