Lets talk GEC!

WTF do all you people work for GEC ? I have now bought 13 of their knives in the last 18 months and no less than 6 should have been discounted factory seconds, living in Canada sending them back is a big expense and hassle. Pissed off in Calgary

When swimming upstream against popular opinion, pictures help support your position. Sans acronyms, s'il vous plait.

You can post pictures by uploading them to a web hosting site such as photobucket. Then copy the web address of the picture and click the insert picture tool (looks like a picture with a frame around it).

If what you're claiming is true, then sometime around knife #12, I'd start to question your judgement.

Why would I make it up ? and one was a GEC made Northwoods, and the last one I'm shipping back.

I'm sure there are imperfections, I'm not doubting that. These knives are made using hands and 100 year old machinery. Your gauge of what should be considered a factory second vs mine might be different though. Do you have pictures?

Please take some pictures before you send it back. If you have trouble posting pictures, we will help.

Weird, out of my 14 including one second, my luck (no luck really) is the opposite. I guess that's what keeps the world in balance.

I don't think anyone is saying that you made it up. Everyone has different standards of what they believe to be acceptable though. I'm often amazed at what gets criticized these days. Some people get very upset over very minor flaws. Granted these knives are sold at a premium (or what many would consider a premium), but the level of quality we currently see in production slipjoint knives is quite unparalleled. Especialy when I think back to what we had back 40-50 years ago.
So yes, pictures would help as there are many knowledgeable folks here as well as some retailers and a few factory personnel.

What particular issues have you experienced and on which knives? There are certain patterns that have had common faults like being more prone to having blade wobble or nail breaking pull.

I have watched every Rob Apostle P traditional video And factory tour videos, I've been following GEC for 3 years my my 92 Autumn Gold is a brilliant knife. My stag/elk covers is where gec has problems, My Two Elk 74s both have significant gaps at the bolsters My 38 Northfield Whittler came with blade rub marks which only have gotten worse 38 Orchard Gem secondary blade has no walk/talk. I just received a Beagle 18 stag that is so inconsistent in thickness it should never have left the factory. My Norfolk main blade came with blade rub.

A few of those with blade rub are quite common for the patterns. The Orchard Gem probably just needs a good flushing and oiling. I cannot comment on the others without seeing pics.

Like bob said, the blade rub is common on single spring knives. Whether or not that is the fault of GEC or just comes with the pattern could be debated. I choose to accept the rub.
I stay away from stag knives for the reason you stated. I've seen enough mismatched stag to know that unless you see pictures of the exact knife you're buying then it's a gamble.
The lack of/ weak walk and talk is one of my biggest pet peeves. I have the same 92, and the coping blade has a really weak snap. Other than that the knife is wonderful. But because of the coping blade I rarely carry it, so I know how frustrating that can be.

'Nice' first post!
I love the Elk 74's. Got pics?

My oldest GEC, next to my newest GEC. Both are 72's.

Since we're on the topic to 72s and fit/finish i have a question. My new 72 has a gap between the lock back and frame. I have 2 other lockback GECs (83 & 99) and those don't have the same gap. Curious to know if this is common or indicative of a F&F issue. I know it won't affect function...

The small gap you see is normal for this run. Not an issue and this can be seen on some other GEC and other brand lockback models.

Like Barry said, that's normal. They are all that way now. GEC made a change to their locking springs. No issues at all.

I'm just looking at my old user 72LB from 2014 and it doesn't have the "gap" at the lockbar/EO notch, but I'm not sure if they changed the lockbar or the EO notch to expose the bottom of the lockbar.

My old one is OD green linen micarta and has aged nicely as well as proven itself to be an excellent using pattern. The new canvas micarta models have a different look and feel to them that I like.
