Lets talk GEC!

Wow, all nice ones, draggat, but that Outlaw is super. Did you do anything to alter the color? Most I've seen are true to the "yellow rose" name.

Thanks! That yellow rose did turn out pretty good. I was actually trying to dye it black but the dye didn't penetrate evenly, or even heavily. What I used was a permanent fiber reactive dye and it requires either salt or vinegar as it's vehicle. I didn't want the blade and spring to be pitted so I omitted both of those. It's permanent in cotton and bone, so at least it shouldn't fade much. The black was a blue base, hence the green.

I was thinking today how awesome it would be for GEC to produce a Kephart fixed blade. I think it would fit into their line up of classic basic fixed blade patterns perfectly. They would do a really good job creating a ~$100 basic no frills true to form version of the original. Something in 1/8" 1095 and hickery or walnut and a nice plain leather belt sheath.
I'm drooling just thinking about it...

Well... I'd buy it. My problem with GEC fixed blades is that I prefer a ticker handle. If the made a Kephart, I might have to take the plunge.

So I have $99.95 in store credit at Collector Knives to spend on a new GEC (currently only have a #14 single blade) and my pocket is on fire. Anyone have any suggestions? I have liked carrying the #14 as a secondary knife to my other EDCs (ZTs and Benchmades), so I don't want one that is too huge, and I'm not a huge fan of stag slabs, my preferred slabs are bone, preferably more subdued colors. I have looked at the Beer Scout/Crown Lifters (specifically the antique yellow one) but I think I'm going to wait for the Golden Ale Jig Bone.

So anyways, anyone have any suggestions?

The beer scout isn't really my cup of tea, but it's a great knife. You can't go wrong with a 15. I'd also recommend the 66 Calf Roper Jack. It's one of my favorite patterns - not too big, not too small. Trouble is, though, Mike only has them left in natural stag which isn't your preference. Another one you might want to take a look at is the 38 farmer's jack. It's a fantastic knife as well.

GEC is probably the worst possible manufacturer to be looking at if you have specific needs and want to buy a knife quickly. The best recommendation I could make would be the 38, like John said. However, that's just because it's the only knife that fulfills your criteria, so there really isn't much to choose from. I'd strongly recommend patience if you want to get a knife that will work well for your needs, or to look at other manufacturers on the Collector Knives site.

I agree with Cory on this one. Not that I'm not a GEC fan. I love them but in your unique situation you might want to give The Shatt & Morgan knives a try. You will have a much bigger choice to pick from. And even though I'm fairly new at this whole knife thing. I've looked through all the major Dealers that carrie Queen knives and You would be hard pressed to do any better then ordering one from Collector knives. His system of showing you just were the knife scores on a scale between 1-10 in his opinion is a brilliant one. Especially given all the negative talk about Qeen knives. Anyways thats my 2 cents worth lol good luck W.S. :D

I think your plan to pick up one of the recent 15 releases is a good one. The 15 is big enough difference from it to the 14, but small enough to still be a secondary with a modern folder. It will give you the opportunity to see how you like the different blade style and have a secondary tool. The cap lifter you can use as a scraper or super light prying/scraping (prying as in prying off a bottle cap type of prying or pulling a tack out of dry wall...) The scout 15's are nice. Did you see the antique yellow jig bone 15 scout?

Thanks for all the responses everyone, sorry if my replies are a bit disjointed...

Yeah, I was also looking at the #15 with the razor blade--I may still get it eventually, just not in red. My only issue with stag is it just isn't uniform enough for me on both sides, which I know would end up bugging me. The #38 is definitely intriguing.

Yeah, I understand what you are saying, and my criteria exists but it isn't in stone or anything, and I'm perfectly fine with having more than one (two) GEC knives if another pops up later that I like. :)

I have looked at Queen and S&M but none of them are really jumping out at me right now (which is good, as that could be dangerous... Ha-friggin'-ha.). Definitely like Collector Knives, I called them earlier to ask a few questions on some of the older knives that don't have the pull levels listed on the site and was met with kindness and knowledge, can't ask for too much more than that.

I did see the antique yellow, which is what my #14 is and I like it a lot, but I think I might just hold out for the golden ale beer scout. I've also been looking at the Tidioute Bocote Congress, the GEC Navy Jack in burnt orange bone, and the Tidioute #73(5212) (though from what I was told, the pull on the #73 is like a 7 or 8, so I'm not sure...).

I have not looked at CK's inventory lately , but if I was looking for a great knife for under $100 right now : I would look for a 72 or 73 in Jigged Bone or Wooden handles . The $100 will cover any of their 3 brands. They are larger than the 14's and 15's and are my favorites since there will be No 77's available.
I would also suggest that you look at CK'S Other Knives category . For $100 you can find a lot of Case knives at CK that fall within that price.

I agree with old engineer. Since you like modern knives a 72 would certainly appeal. Either micarta, rosewood or blackwood. All three are great and although there is a lot of love on here for 15's, I cant think of a single GEC that I would rather have in hand for general duty work.

I have to agree with the 73. I just bought one not long ago and I have to say is seems to fit the bill. It has the clean no-nonsense lines of a modern knife while retaining all the charm and character of a traditional.

I'm leaning towards either the ebony #73 or the grizzly cut bone #72.

I think either one would be a great choice !!! The Ebony is a real classic and the Grizzly Cut Bone is very unique !!! I myself have a Natural Stag and 3 of the Violet Pioneer Bone . All are pretty nice . 2 of the Violets will be gifted.
Please post a picture or 4 after you get it.

Harry

Seconded - nice choice. I didn't wind up with a 72 from this latest run, but the Grizzly cut looks really cool. Looking forward to hearing how you like it.
