Lets talk GEC!

No, it's all good. Just want to make a mental note next thread that shows aggravation for all the SFO's - that there are some folks that want more....
Very few acts or decisions suit everyone, but at least people are passionate about them... That's a great start.
Thanks I appreciate that.

I will be one to say that i want more SFO's especially 77 and 15 barlows. Maybe then you wouldn't have to morgage your home, sell soul to devil, sell organs on blackmarket, give up first born etc.

Ha ha ha!! Good one! I am not saying SFOs to everyone and their mother. Ha ha. Maybe just spread it out just a little?

That's hilarious! Will they include unicorn buttons?! :D

I was trying not to be jealous of the new Northfield 25s, but it's tough now that I checked out "What's Happening".

The polished stag looks absolutely amazing!

I was actually going to say something earlier today but got busy and forgot. But yes, I do not usually care for stag but the examples shown on these 25s look really good. I will look forward to seeing the finished knife.

African Blackwood and Gabon Ebony, which one do you prefer?

What's the difference between them?Which one is darker?Ebony?

And did old knives ever use African Blackwood? It seems like old knives chose ebony rather than blackwood.

Oh man, here I go.

So AB is a species of Rosewood. Gaboon Ebony is typically darker, but there are AB examples that rival any Ebony I've seen. AB is very resinous and dense, and is supposed to be more stable than GE, though I've had large fixed blade scales made of AB that have shown a noticeable amount of movement.

"Old knives" seem to use ebony, but ANCIENT knives may have used Blackwood, as it is thought that the original Egyptian ebony was actually blackwood, and not what we call ebony today.

As far as what I prefer, I think they're both great for GEC style knives. You can't really go wrong with either.

As far as I know,AB is also harder than GE,might be one of the hardest wood in the world.
(I have a friend who is fond of sculpture,he told me when he carved AB,it was just as hard as stone.)
And AB is typically dark brown when you polish them.
BTW,if the ebony used in ancient knives were called as "egyptian ebony",it should be AB.AB grow in east coast area of Africa, while Gabon is in the west coast.

I am new to blade forums. How do you purchase a blade forums sfo?

They're all spoken for this year. Check out the sticky threads on this sub for more info.

I'd imagine some will hit the secondary market, so you might want to keep an eye on the classifieds after they're released.

Regarding Ebony vs Blackwood on GECs:

I'm generally a jigged bone fan, so my purchases and collection of any wooden handled knives is less extensive than others here, but when buying sight unseen, I typically feel "safer" buying African Blackwood on GEC knives.

I know they've used different Ebonies (Gabon and Macassar(?)), so that may make a difference, but while some ebony knives have been pitch black and beautiful, there seems to be a greater variance than in the blackwood covers.

It seems that on a scale of 1-10 (1 being a medium brown, 10 being a deep pure black) - the Ebonies seem to range from 1-10 and the blackwood seem to be in the 6-9 range on a consistent basis.

Again, just my experience with GEC knives - certainly not a statement of fact.
