Lets talk GEC!

What I don't get is when myself or others suggest a pattern that isn't rooted in a preexisting traditional "pattern", it ruffles a bunch of feathers and folks go to grab their pitch forks and torches...

A barlow with screwed on slabs?
A Hawbaker blade combo on a moose frame?
And a myriad of other options...

But GEC comes up with this on their own, and the folks that normally pipe up, now keep their heads in the sand...

Unless someone can point out an example of this particular pattern made 50+ years ago, this will now be my reference and arguement as to why knives that are made in a traditional form don't have to be "traditional patterns"...

Ok so it sounds like this knife will be for you and you will enjoy it. Not hard to understand. It is all preference and opinion. When will see what happens with this run.

Yes I just saw that! I was going to copy and paste the link but I thought again.
1800 Tidioute and Northfields PLUS…….. 1000 SFO’s. That’s almost 3000 single blade 78’s.

That is a huge production run and definitely changes my game plan. Why such a huge run? That is it for this year!

Wow, just read quantity of 1000 SFO's on the 78's. Will be interesting to see what choices will be available.
Really hoping some SFOs have clips instead of spears. Or maybe not. December's a good time to not want many knives.

Keep in mind that there are single blade and 2 blade variants of the 78 on the production docket. I imagine that those are all included in the numbers.

I actually like the looks of the 78 and am certainly looking forward to experiencing the pattern in hand. I think both variants are going to prove to be quite useful with the single blade being the more popular choice, of course. I am certainly developing a fondness for regular jacks and this one could hit the sweet spot, I think. Only thing that would make it better, would be a sheepfoot main. :D A spear is a nice close second though.

I know we aren't supposed to be excited about the fixed blades, but I am really liking the looks of that chestnut....

Believe it or not, the verbiage on that particular blog lends one to believe those numbers are for single blades only. I'm not saying it's fact, but it reads that way to me.

Oh, interesting. I don't know what blog has that info but, Yikes! That is a rather large production run, made even larger with the included 2 blade variants.

Why are we not to be excited?

Oh, I am just continuing to poke fun at the ho-hum attitude towards GEC's unglamorous and uninspired fixed blade designs. :D
Personally, I am looking forward to seeing these hit the dealer's shelves so I can contemplate picking up one or two. I really do like that chestnut, and deer and elk season is upon me already!

Just reading along on the last few pages of this thread. Although the Calf Pen is certainly not for me, I hope whomever buys one gets excellent use out of it.

I get ya. If I was a hunter I would feel the same.

Yup. I caught that. But still a behemoth run. Expected to run till the end of the year?? Wow!

Really has nothing to do about being excited. It's just not going to be necessary to mad dash for them with this huge run, no matter if it 1 or 2 Blades.

I was referencing a comment made about the run of fixed blades, not the folders.

SFO's only offered in single, same setup as general production. 1000 sfo's in addition to general production. So 10 sfo's x 100pcs.

Regarding the Calf Pen, here is what a dealer said to me when i first started down this "accumulation of traditionals road".

Josh,
****The first thing I learned about selling knives is that everybody has different tastes. What one person will think* is the most wonderful thing ever seen, the next person might say "eewww", what the hell is that?"

Now, who can name the distributor that said this? I quoted his exact words almost a year ago.
Gone but not forgotten.
