Lets talk GEC!

I received a couple 71's today (blows the Case Sodbuster Jr. out of the water), and even though the end labels are now computer printed, as is usual for GEC they didnt just print black ink end labels folks. Each label is now printed in an ink color that matches the handles for that knife, which is hilarious attention to detail. I love GEC.
That's awesome! I guess there will be no more white knives:p

I'm really impressed by the #71 Bullnose in OD Grean Linen micarta I got today. It definitely feels nicer than the others I've had (I think I've had and sold 3 plus a Bullbuster). Perfect centering, strong (7.5-8) but smooth (enough) and manageable pull (also pretty pinchable), tip nowhere near proud (awesome), no blade rap, great looking covers, and really well sharpened. I got this for two reasons; 1) my girlfriend has specifically pointed out this knife in these covers the last two times they've made them as being good looking, so hey it's pretty much the cheapest GEC so why not and 2) I'm going on a trip this weekend and want to have a GEC knife to take that I don't have to worry as much about losing and not being able to replace. I am glad I got one. I find it interesting that they're printing the labels on the tops of the tubes now, but moreso I'm surprised that they didn't already now that I think of it.

That looks fantastic, I've got a red one coming my way but I think I may need a green one too now..

Well apparently my girlfriend thought this was black when GEC posted it on Instagram.... So.....

I was thinking about getting a red also, but they seem to have sold out like immediately (other than some dealers with a little higher prices)

Unless they use black label stickers :p;)

That'd be cool

Yeah, and the muslin micarta was gone in a heartbeat..

Did someone have it cheaper than the $57.26 DSR?

BTW, I do understand why some dealers price these a bit higher than normal. There is no margin in them once they are shipped in a Priority box.

No, some have them at $62.

And at $57.xx mine was shipped first class, not priority, so maybe the ones at $62 are shipped priority.

I'm not really complaining either, $62 isn't bad for these but under $60 just feels better.

BTW, do you think the Red Linens were shipped in split shipments?

I think the point Mike was making is that the red micarta are not sold out everywhere.

I can't believe there are still Natural canvas' at CK...
as well as Red.

I see only a pre-order on Collector Knives for the Red Linen, saying that it was split shipping. Doesn't that mean that there are no more red linen on hand knifeswapper knifeswapper ? If so, then I consider them sold out until the next shipment arrives. If Mike is getting split shipments, then isn't it likely other dealers are also? Or no?

Squidman24 Squidman24 Yeah I misworded that, I meant the whole run. Like are they not done producing the red linen yet.

Sorry, I interpreted what you posted to mean that you want to buy one, but can't.

I'm really not trying to argue here and didn't mean anyone offense. Like I said, they are still literally in stock at at least one dealer at $62, so I definitely could (and might) buy one. But a pre-order is different than being in stock and I'm trying to pre-order less knives in general. Plus, if one dealer is getting split shipments I wouldn't be surprised if others did also, so these probably will come back in stock. I'm not disparaging any particular dealer (whether they do a pre-order or have their price a few dollars higher), I'm just observing.

I guess if they have to ship first class in an envelope now instead of priority box this weekend, I can see the logic.

We order several knives at a time. Thus GEC tries to send everyone a few on the first shipment date. So, the dealers that order 3-10 typically get all of theirs and we are generally sent a portion. Then once the smaller orders are satisfied, we get the remaining portion of our order.

Also, I wouldn't assume that the elevated price is because of shipping method - I would just assume it was a need for more of a margin.

This is what seems likely to me. The dealers that have the higher prices typically have them higher across the board on GECs, and it isn't usually more than $5-$8, which is about the cost of shipping. They seem to do much less business than the bigger dealers.

The #71 is obviously a favorite and sells well. I can’t think of a year where they weren’t produced...in my short time.

It is GEC’s most solid knife, IMO. I have three. I almost got another, but I need to use the ones I have.

Not counting the Farm and Field, has GEC made a shadow pattern? Sitting here with my CSC BF knife thinking GEC could do a great job on something along these lines but couldn’t find anything. I know I’ve seen some recovered. How about just bolster tips? (Forgive me if that’s not the right term). I used to not like them but for some reason their growing on me...

The only non-F&F GEC shadow pattern knives I can think of (and someone can correct me if these don't count as a shadow pattern, but I'm pretty sure they do) are these #28 French Kates from 2015.

8 is stiffer'n snot - it ain't no city boy knife.

Interesting assessment. I guess I've never thought of the pull on the Bull Nose as all that stiff, but maybe that's because it's easily pinchable. Do you recall how you rated the pull on previous runs? (I don't have one from this run yet, but should today or tomorrow, so I guess I'll see for myself how it compares.)

I have to say, although it's more "basic" than most of the other knives GEC produces, the Bull Nose is one of my favorite knives that GEC makes. My only complaint is that I don't always get excited when they announce a new run, because the handle materials are generally the same as previous runs -- most of which I own already, or am not particularly interested in (orange Delrin). So I'm excited about the Muslin Micarta, which should arrive in my mailbox shortly. :D

I forgot about those Burlap #71s. I honestly have no idea why I didn't pick one of those up.

If memory serves they have came in from 6 to 8 in the past. I just find it a bit cumbersome when using the nail nick on a tight half stop - like someone slamming on the breaks when you're in the passenger seat. A good 6-7 is more my taste.
