Lets talk GEC!

Agreed, that's the one that caught my eye as well, looking forward to seeing more pictures of these as production begins to unfold.

I'm not so sure about that, the Northfield spears look very nice. Never thought I would see a #99 that appealed to me but these all look great.

The stag Clip 99 looks like it'll be really cool to me... too many awesome knives coming up!

So I've not seen anyone post many (I think someone posted one or two) pictures of the rendezvous special. I sharpened mine and its ready for use. I've given in to the fact that I have a couple of GEC's for "collection" purposes, whereas at first I would only keep a knife I was going to use. I'm wondering if this knife in particular would be better to keep in good shape for posterity? I know you guys usually say to use it, and that's usually how I feel too, but I'm just not sure with this being the first rendezvous that I attended. Thanks for your input!

I think you knew the answer before you asked the question. I would put it up. Only 30 were made. It has a unique and meaningful handle material. It reporesents a unique and probably meaningful experience for you personally. A lot of unique stuff going on there.

Nice knife ALHSS. I would just carry it like a worry stone and have a second knife in my pocket to use for cutting. That's me though. :)

I think most people posted in the Rendezvous thread. I wasn't able to attend but I've been lucky to have friends help me out with my collection of #48s.

The sentimental nature of your rendezvous charlow is all the more reason to carry and enjoy it.
Does little for you in a box.

In my limited experience the more I use a knife the more I bond with it. I can't imagine looking at a well worn knife that I've used countless times and thinking that I wish I hadn't used that knife. Therefore, the only reason to not carry it is if you're going to sell it. Since you already have an attachment to this knife, it's safe to say you don't plan on selling it. Use the knife.

Thanks for all of your input guys!

rma100:

You're right, I did have a good idea what i wanted to do. The problem is I keep knowing or deciding back and forth. On one hand I never meant to become a collector, but on the other hand I have accepted that I have a couple knives that I want to keep in good shape. I even have one, maybe two, that I did use quite a bit and now kind of wish I had kept them in a bit better shape because I think they will have a cool historical appeal if kept. I'm a history person. It is definitely special also because my family is in the oil business and I grew up riding around in my dad's work truck hearing his historical tales of the old Titusville oil fields.

HuntBomb:

That's true, it almost seems greedy to hide away a knife that is meaningful. That's why I recently let go one of the other rendezvous exclusives, I knew someone else would get more enjoyment out of it.

Cory Hess:

You're right, either way if I carry it or not I definitely have no plans of selling. And I also agree that using a knife makes it have even more meaning to you.

Markesharp:

That's what I did today basically, as I carried it in a slip and just took it out to open and close it and such every now and then in a free moment.

Well, you guys have been a big help! I think I'm going to keep it in good shape, try to keep the etch clean and clear, and carry it every now and then if I rfeel like it in a slip. Thanks again for your input!

Charlie made a comment that sort of surprised me (but probably shouldn't have, because of his collection with knives in good shape). It regards whether or not to preserve a rare knife. I don't know if he would feel the same way about the sucker wood knife though.

From thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1014942-Use-or-Preserve

Preserve it!
It is hard to find a first Gen in near mint condition! Why erase history that has been entrusted to you??

Is this happening? They look great.

Since the 77 will be the "new" pattern for this year's BF Knife, it wouldn't be hard to run longer bolstered barlows at the same time.

Because it's Northfield, these would be priced higher than the TC Barlows which in turn will make it out what I'm willing to pay for a knife.:D

Thanks for sharing sonnemann.

What does Pioneer Bone look like? Has GEC used this on any other patterns?

Thanks,
Mark

I really like the look of this larger barlow, and GEC should do very will with this adaptation of the 77 pattern. That clip/wharncliffe combination looks aesthetically right to my eyes--and would be a nice compliment to my 2009 Forum Barlow. And of course I love the shape of the clip with it's cut swedge--just like our Forum Knives.

Two things detract from the knife for me. For the Northfield price I'd like longpulls on the main blade. I also don't care for the bolster imprint. The TC, Russell, and every other Barlow imprint I've ever seen have panache, grace, elegance & proportion. That giant block "N" with the little Italic "f" looks awkward to me.

But overall--yeah, a really sweet design! It could tempt me.

Oh, 2Dead: wow, just wow! Nice collection of #48s!!

Thanks Rob :) I'm only missing 1 of the #48s they made for the Rendezvous... A #48 Jack with the burn orange wave jigged bone like the one above but with the pen opening on the mark side instead of the pile side. The numbers Charlie posted from Christine say only 2 were made. That #48 and one of Charlies DE #48 Jacks in Antique Yellow bone (only 3 made) are the only #48 jacks GEC ever made that I'm missing. Here's the rest of my #48 Jack group.

I have to agree on the Nf on the bolster.

Here's a picture of my 23 in Pioneer Bone when it was new:

I really like the looks of that barlow. I even like the N on the bolster. It fits nicely I think. I'm going to have to decide whether to pick up one of these or wait for the next Charlow to come out.
