Lets talk GEC!

This sheath discussion is a good one- I inherited a number of Case belt sheaths from Dad, and for the life of me I can't figure out why it's a snap button design. I laid on my side one time to paint some trim and the metal button marred the buffalo horn on the medium stockman I had in there. it just seems like unnecessary damage waiting to happen. I do like the idea of having the option to carry outside of a pocket, though.

So who carries your GEC in a sheath, and what's it look like?
Can we get some pictures? Can we get some testimonials?
(really hoping to whip up into a frenzy on this one so I can convince myself I need one.)

@Elgatodeacero good recommendation- checked out the instagram associated with @Makael and wooooooo, those are some beautiful sheaths. I can't even imagine what quality like that would cost a simple lover of knives... haha.

...another free and cheap solution for you...go to hardware store and buy a pack of felt carpet surface savers...they are those self-adhesive circles or strips you can stick on the back of chairs, picture frames etc to prevent marring your walls. Buy the circle style in the light duty thickness. Peel the paper backing off and stick it over the snap on the inside of the sheath. You can also glue a small circle of suede over the snap...I have done both.

I like an even patina on an old blade and I have plenty of those, I’ve experimented and had good results pickling blades in a hot water and vinegar solution, I just like to keep my new knives looking new I guess.

Do have also have stock in surface savers? :D
great idea, but why can't you just let me spend lots of money I don't have to spend?:p

My 74 Stallion in a Case horizontal sheath from Collector Knives. Inexpensive and does the trick. The leather does stretch easily, so if you put a bigger knife in it, the smaller ones will slide out if you go back to them.

Here’s a couple pieces of fun whittling projects: once again both carved solely with their respective knives.
On the left a top carved from a branch from a red maple that fell in the yard. (Yes, it spins and it’s pretty well balanced!)
On the right one of those “S” figures (many of us in our 30’s probably remember from middle school), turned 3D front and back, made from a scrap of pine I found from a friend’s job site.

One of the things I like about pocket knives is the small scale work you can do almost anywhere with a piece of wood laying around. GEC has produced the finest folding knives I’ve ever put to wood.

Oh man that S brings back memories. What the heck was that all about anyways? In 5th grade every kid I knew was drawing that S on papers.

That's a sweet setup... I'm honestly shocked the knife stays in place, but I love the look of the side-draw... I'm tempted. I wonder if there's a more "diagonal" draw?

I think it was just something easy that any kid could draw that had a cool effect. I think it's funny how those little things travel so far and become some shared detail many of us have in common. I was glad it came back to me when I was looking at that 1x3.

I don't know of any diagonal draws that wouldn't be custom made. I've had one knife that fell out while I was mowing the lawn with my push mower (my son found it in the yard), but since then I just make sure I press the knife in tight and I haven't had any trouble.

On the sheath issue I have found that the capdebarthes work well and can be worn either vertically or horizontally. I am leery of open/flapless sheaths and other than the capdebarthes leather being a bit thinner than expected I really like the style and security. If I was better at it I would post pics of the 2 I have, one is big enough for either my 23 or 98 and I have the smaller version that I carry medium to large stockman in when the mood hits.

You can also get self-adhesive suede from any craft store.

... but then how will I spend money on something I don't need?

Uh, I mean it used to be available. Before it was... made illegal? For completely logical and well thought out reasons. Sure, that’s the ticket.:p

I really don’t think you have an alternative but a new sheath. Sorry.

This is why I like you people.

I’ve used this sheath with full size trappers, 4” wharncliffes and other 2 blades 3 3/4”+ for 3 years and never had one fall out.

Those covers look great but I’m happy with my beaver tail, one two hand opening liner lock is enough for me. Does anybody else wish they had put this liner lock on last year’s 97’s?
I do. Having a liner lock on a large knife seems to me to make sense.

they've announced the Mesquite! it's sure gorgeous. Great choice @knifeswapper. is that 13/14? or 14/14? what's the next knife!?
Well they have to build the Northwoods on the 23 frame (last KSF sfo). Then they have to do the mud bugs, these were announced on the S&S website this week. Then the 33s. And then and only then we will find out they are making a run of 16 canoes. ;):D

boy I can’t wait to find out they are making #16 canoes. When do you think they will tell us? :p

man... that’s a lot of SFOs. Feels like 23’s have been running for ever. Mud bugs are exciting for what that is. The #33 just jumped up in my book, if what you say is true...

are you serious about the #16’s though? Or just fooling? I’m sure it’d be a great pattern for someone, but I’m not a big canoe fan... I imagine in the traditional spear/pen combo, which would be a “meh” for me.
