Let's talk Northwoods

View attachment 1142489 View attachment 1142491 They definitely hit a home run with the Coolidge, but I too am not sure if it's for me. I hope it is because of how well it is made and how good it looks.

I wasn’t tempted at all initially by the #12, but I like the looks of the Northwoods version with the clip blade. It reminds me of an old fashioned clasp knife. That jigged wood looks great!

I picked up a Kudu bone #64. In the picture on KSF it looked as though it had a Jupiter red spot on it.

I wasn't really sure about the Toothpick in general. The muskrat clip is nice and keeps it slim, but this Saber clip fits the frame better visually for me. The Kudu bone looks fantastic. The pull is fairly stiff with a good snap. I was totally expecting a half stop on it. Nice surprise that it didn't have one. Overall a very nice knife, but alas I don't think it's for me.

With my others.

That is cool to see. Also interesting that the older versions had muskrats before they went to the rustic blade.

I suspect those other two were pre-KSF/Bohn Northwoods. I think Derrick started the rustic blade thing with NW.

Sure. And really the rustic blade is fine. But I didn't realize there would be any reference point for a Northwoods toothpick before this. I've only been in this game a couple years. It's a fun process to trace the history on some of this stuff.

The Kudu Bone Coolidge arrived today. No gaps, no transition issues, no dings, and centered perfectly. The blade is quite stiff to open but is extremely secure in the open position. The Kudu Bone is really a different experience for me. The surface has a lacquered, shiny appearance. There are 2 or 3 small divots or pockmarks. The bone appears to be translucent. I would appreciate some information about the bone and its look.

I've taken a couple of quick phone pics but I'm not sure the appearance will come through.

Thank you for any help/info you can offer.

Pictures of the coolidge look like they have steel pins. Can somebody confirm? If the pins are steel, what about the liners?

Thanks, Chris-

Looks like you have a nice example. I have the same stiffness, but it’s not excessive. I imagine a cleaning/flushing, and oiling will make it purr. Opening the blade on mine is between a 6 and a 7, which some actually prefer. I have a couple of beauty marks, not divots, which is not unusual on bone. Shooting in sunlight, like I did will make your Kudo bone sing. Good luck.

The kudu bone has a pretty wide range of variance. The Coolidge I got was not translucent. But the bear lake I bought looks very close to your Coolidge. All look incredible but I prefer the kind you have- honeycomb translucent with the epoxy coating.

Hey Chris, I snagged a black linen micarta Coolidge Jack and it does have steel liners and pins.

I would like to see a "properly sized" toothpick at 5-5.5 inches made by GEC. This one seems a little small. Then again, I really dislike the Case "Tiny Toothpick", so I like to have a little size on this pattern.

Interesting to me. Never touched a traditional like these toothpicks, not sure

It’s the only Kudu I have, looks fantastic imo, wish I also had some other patterns with it. I’m up in the air with this one, I want to like it more, it just didn’t instantly grab me like other patterns. But I do like the blade shape and how less of the tang is exposed when closed. Fit and finish are great on this and the heat treat is nice and even. Centered, no play, flush etc etc. I wouldn’t have minded a half stop. The more it all about it the more I appreciate it. Just not sure it’ll stick around but I had to get my hands on one to see.
