Let's talk Northwoods

For once i was logged on and signed in to the site five minutes before the drop and kept hitting refresh until they popped up. Snagged a red micarta right as they came up and then must have lost 3-4 mammoths as i tried to check out, and by the last mammoth, literally everything was gone. Really happy though, since i got one of the two i wanted.

These knives are beautiful! Does GEC produce all the Northwood knives? I think I read somewhere online that there were 500 pieces in this last offering. I don't know if that was true or not. I wonder if that means that there were 100 pieces in each handle material?

Was the Burlap(?) Micarta a new material for them? Also, is that a wharncliff blade? Thanks.
Larry
My understanding is that 500 pieces is now the maximum number that GEC will do for a special factory order, like we are seeing with a run of Northwoods. So while we don't have official information from GEC or KSF, it's pretty well understood (or assumed) that this run was approximately 500 pieces. 100 in each material??? Probably a fair guess. I think there's usually less than 100 mammoth and less than 100 stag (like...perhaps 80 or 90 of each?), so there may have been more than 100 of some of the micartas. But this is just conjecture.

Burlap is not new for Northwoods. It is relatively new, though, I think. I believe they've only used it within the last couple of years. This may be the debut for "Smoke" burlap. But they've had brown/tan burlap, green burlap, red burlap...can't remember others off-hand. My understanding is that the Derrick Bohn had the burlap micarta made by a knife-maker friend of his who he did not want to name. I guess the blade is a wharncliffe, but people have categorized it as something in between a wharncliffe and a sheepfoot....a "Bohncliff." It is what it is...people can call it what they like. ;)

Here he talked a bit about the blade shape.

My favorites now I've really been leaning to the fayette and lil bay. But the ffg on the Esky with brass liners is up there, for sure!

Ide love to ahve an esky zulu, but i missed them. In fact, I have missed every northwoods ever offered

I was referring to Northwoods in general. I assume the answer is the same...that no one knows until we get the email notice.
There are usually a few Northwoods runs a year. No one knows for sure until the email comes out, but Derrick liked to drop hints. The mystery is part of the allure.

Sometimes when you see gec releasing a pattern, it will coincide with a Northwoods drop. Like the 25s and 78s recently. Sometimes not

It did seem like the 'what's happening?' page on GECs website was stuck on production pics of the 15 for a while...In hindsight I guess they were workin away on these. They are good at keeping it secret!

Glad I got in on a Freemont Jack, would be ecstatic to hear that GEC is doing another run of 79s!!!

This is the first Fremont release I've been around for. Had no idea that the 79 never accompanied the Fremont in previous runs.

I've heard the max is 500 like you say and minimum of 100 per cover option for SFOs. Not sure how many stag but I got #95 so I assume it was close to the magic 100. I suppose it's possible a few don't make the cut from a QC perspective but not sure.
