Lets talk pocket slip / sheath / organizer carry

I have about a dozen pairs of 5.11 pants, which have a discrete and slim 'magazine pocket' on the front of each thigh. They're perfect to slip a pocket knife into. Phone goes in the left front/side pocket (though there are other pockets), bandana and change go in the right/side pocket. I usually carry my wallet and specs in vest or jacket pockets, but very occasionally in cargo pockets

I only ever carry one knife and it goes into my left front pocket by itself (I’m left handed). Phone in left back, wallet in right back, and everything else (keys, chap stick, change, mustache wax) in right front. I carry a pen and notes in my shirt pocket. Because the knife is by itself, I never really used a slip.

This year, I won a JohnDF JohnDF giveaway and received a very nice slip he made that holds a knife and pen. Since then I’ve been using the slip on and off and really like it. I like how it holds the knife upright and the pen is handy when I don’t have a shirt pocket. The size is just right to hold a lot of the daily users that I carry. Here it is brand new:

And here it is with a few miles on it:

I don’t carry it it every day, but I do like to use it and I don’t mind the extra “fiddlyness” of a slip. I think I like this style more than just a regular slip that only holds the knife. This seems to move around less in the pocket.

I have a question for all of you slip carriers. Do you generally dedicate one slip to one particular knife or do you put in what ever knife will fit? I’ve been swapping several in my slip, as long as they fit in without stretching it out.

I have one slip, made by @Pàdruig for the Guardians of the Lambsfoot, that I use only for the 8 lambsfoot knives I have. I typically have a different lambsfoot in the slip each week for an 8-week cycle.

But I have several other "slips" that I use fairly regularly to carry whatever knives from a given week's carry will fit into the slips. I used to carry all of these in my pants pockets, but the "knife wallet" on bottom left, the "double slip" on bottom middle, and the whittling thumbguard on top right that I often use to hold two small folders typically go in a bag I carry.

- rarely use a slip unless it's a very small folder, in which case the slip leather is quite thin and in time molds itself - thus becoming dedicated - to that folder alone.

If you're in the habit of happily carrying a normal size folder in a slip, then the slips made of much thicker leather are often good for multi folder use as they always want to 'clam' up thereby holding on firmly to whatever is inside, and don't tend to mold themselves to one particular folder

I actually have a dedicated slip for each knife for when I carry it. My Wife makes them or me out of hobbies leather. The stuff you can find in places like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. She sews them on her sewing machine. They are very simple but they work exceptionally well for me.
Some of the slips I have seen in this thread are exceptional pieces of work.

Interesting anecdote I've noticed: I've had smooth leather slips fall out of my slick dress pant pockets multiple times, especially when reaching to grab other items in the same pocket.

I have a soft suede finish slip named MAM 3000 that fixes this problem, grabs onto the pocket lining well while still being easy enough to pull out. Unfortunately it's one size only and large enough to fit an Opinel 8.

I have one of those slips, too, and really like it, but it IS big. I've been using mine to carry some 5" channel-lock-style pliers, usually in the leg pocket of carpenter pants.

My 8 year old son made this for me for Christmas. He came up with the idea a couple weeks ago and, totally on his own, went into the garage, got out the leather tools, found some leather scraps, trimmed them, punched some holes, and stitched it up. He said he grabbed a couple of my knives to size it correctly. Needless to say I was very surprised and proud of him.

I gotta ask what is the swell pattern knife? Looks really great? Can I see an open pic? Don’t mean to hijack the thread....

Rough Ryder Reserve RRR003 Whittler. Sorry no open pics, but the few dealers who still have it in stock should have more pics. It's a very large and heavy knife but quickly became one of my favourites.

That really cool. Even if I didn't use one before, I'd be using one from the kids.
