Let's talk Queen/S&M

Dr.M Good to see that Half Congress, clearly a tough character.

In the same vein, here's my Work Horse Barlow in carbon/jigged delrin. This is an excellent working Barlow (that's what they were for before the exotic handle craze altered perspectives) centred blade, fine W&T, thick delrin slabs very rugged construction, the external pivot might look crude but if you ever needed to tighten it up it would be simplicity. Flush in two positions, you can pinch it open and nicely finished end spring. Decent for 39 USD I'd say!

This here is a #31 and I have a terrible confession to make... I like it better than my GEC #62. Which makes me feel foolish for paying 3x more for the GEC but such is knife collecting.

This beast handles everything I ask of it. Lately it's been cutting a ton of carpet and zip ties while I redo my downstairs. Queen's D2 is just so good. It took me awhile to put an intial edge on it with just a sharpmaker (why spend money on better sharpening equiment when you can buy more knives, amirite?) but once it's there oh my goodness does it like to work. The winterbottom carved delrin may not look as pretty as acrylic but is tough and shows no scratches.
Then there's the real winterbottom bone. It is really hard to show you how nice it looks in person. Let's just say this is my favorite jigged bone of all time.

Slightly more refined blade shape and a pretty neat etch.

D2 for days!!

The 32 is a solid chunk of steel and bone. Also, four blades with no rub.

Well now I want one of those half congress in D2, nice knife

Hmm, just ordered a queen railsplitter. I've not had much luck with queen/SM in the past, so this is my last attempt. I hope this looks like the pics on KSF.

Assuming this knife doesn't walk and talk like me after too many beers, I'm interested to see which of the two covers below I end up with (borrowed pics). One would be awesome and the other would be really disappointing.

Not sure how these are both Amber carved bone stag :/

Sorry it's a picture I've posted before.

^ Queen Copperhead in CZ. Took me two to get a good one. Heavily reground, thinned down and convexed. Now an incredible knife. Has been in my belt pouch for a year until just a couple of weeks ago when I got my #15 Navy Knife which is getting a turn.

^ Small lockback in CZ, F&F not great and had to be re-profiled significantly but it lives in my bedside drawer for bedroom cutting type tasks.

I'm on the look out for a Country Cousin, D2 in black to replace my Case Sodbuster Jr.

I have had mixed experiences with Queen and S&M knives. My favorite is this Queen Classics Doctors Knife in winterbottom bone.

I also have a S&M Heritage Ebony Clip Point I'm quite fond of that I got second hand in rough shape. I polished it up put on a new edge and it's a fantastic analog to a GEC #77, just a bit beefier.
No photos at this time.

I have been looking at the rail splitters lately but would probably want the older version with the spey for the 3rd blade that had the liner in the middle and slanted bolsters. The comparison Mike did a while back showed the differences in the two knives.

If I did get one I need a hand picked one. A coworker got a S&M Woodsman and it was laughably bad, I mean awful. The jimping on the back of the blade looked like a kids toys, there was zero snap to the spring, blades wobbled and the lanyard hole looked like they used lead to line it vs a nice finished fitted steel.

Couldn't believe it got out the door.

I love the Queen designs. To me their greatest strength is their wealth of really well-shaped and well-proportioned, utterly traditional patterns. Unfortunately, I haven't had great luck with their fit-and-finish, and so I've almost-but-not-quite developed a look-but-don't-touch mentality. Those Teardrop Jacks with two blades are gorgeous! Oh, one other niggle I have is that it seems a lot of times their branding is a bit over the top. I love the looks of Schatt & Morgan but I don't necessarily want a knife in my pocket that says "S&M" in about three places.

same, recently got hooked on their medium coke bottle in blue bone. but ive definitely bought enough this month.

Carry my #49f (farriers) cattleman stockman every day , birds eye maple. Seems like I find new uses for the hook and punch all the time . F&f are great sharp outta the box, I did lower the hook a little for a better pocket ride. Also have the 3 bladed hj from s&m, but I try to keep it nice.(+ I love the d2 better than 420hc)

I've often thought the same thing. Good to know that I'm not the only one.

I have one of the Large Congress knives from 2005 with the signature bolsters. Superb knife in just about every way and a real looker. I first saw it when I didn't know a whole lot about knives and the huge "S&M" on both bolsters kind of threw me for a loop at first. My wife had the same reaction when I first got the knife. I had to explain to her about the Schatt & Morgan branding.

Personally, I'm proud to own the knife but that particular branding distracts from its beauty when seen by non knife enthusiasts.

I'm new to BF, and this is my first post. I got kind of fired up when I saw the thread. I know Queen has had (and continues to have, I suppose) their share of QC issues, but I've really been impressed with some of the stuff I've picked up recently. The QCCC Congress knives are just awesome. The action is silky, there's almost no blade rub, and the scales are beautiful - especially the stag knife which I got for a song. The Robeson barlows that came out a few years back are great as well, and I also love this cool elk-scaled moose that was made in '95 for Dave Shirley's Custom Shoppe. I've also gotten a little carried away lately collecting the late 80s/early 90s Winchesters. They can be had MIB for less than the new MSRP was back then. They're really, really well built.

This Queen Copperhead is a frequent carry. I thinned the primary grind and the bevel quite a bit. The D2 is a mean slicer that works and works. The handle fits my hand really well.

This 2009 Forum knife, well, I'm just proud to own it! One blade stamped Queen, the other stamped Schatt-Morgan. Clip and Wharncliffe blades. What's not to love?
