Let's talk SAK's !

Never had any problems with mine, but thanks for giving me another thing to lose sleep over.

Sorry, but knowledge is always good. If you keep an eye on it, maybe you'll notice if the spring is working it's way out of it's position and avoid losing it.

I don't know exactly what happened to mine and I certainly didn't notice it getting out of it's position.

THAT is a great tip.

I always collect my sawdust no matter where it comes from- stuff damn near explodes if you give it a reason to. Laying a large flat piece of bark perpendicular to the log underneath where you're sawing is a good way to collect a significant amount of sawdust. I just light it right on the bark to give it a dry platform to build the kindling on. The SAK saw is exceptional for making very precise cuts, since it's so thin. Very effective tool.

I like my Vic Soldier (new) and my Wenger Ranger very much but they are the only ones I own. I have been thinking on getting a OHT for the tweezers and tooth pic. I suppose the least used item on mine are the can openers...but that doesn't mean I wish they weren't there.

I have either a Huntsman or Hiker stashed as a back-up knife (and handy multi-tool) in each of my daypacks and backpacks.

For casual trail hiking or walks, I often carry an Explorer as my only knife.

I prefer Vics, but do have a couple of Wengers. The ones I have (don't know the model names; one has camo scales and a locking main blade) seem to be on par with the Vics. They actually seem to have a more durable scissor spring... I've replaced a couple on my Victorinox knives over the years.

I find that I use all the tools. I had my doubts about the "parcel carrier" or whatever they call that folding hook on the bottom of some of the newer models, but it turns out it's an excellent tent peg puller! (I have holes drilled and/or cord loops added to all my pegs.)

Stay sharp,

The tools I use the most are the main blade, saw, awl, and scissors. If I could find an alox-handled Vic with just those, I would be very happy. And the tweezers and toothpick are very handy, too.

As it is, I usually get what I need with a Farmer and Classic combination.

Sawdust is nice, my first successful fires started with a ferro rod and normal wood were done with sawdust produced with my SAK.

Had a huntsman for a while, but i lost it. Had a camper model, but lost that too. :D

Have had the Hunter model for the last year or so, got it for $10 a walllys, and its still kicking around.

Electrician Plus (sheepsfoot cable blade instead of can opener + saw) Pioneer Harvester (pruning blade instead of can opener + saw), Farmer.

For an all-purpose bushcraft/survival tool all you really need is a blade and an awl, like a 'harness knife'. The saw would just make it that much better.

The old style Camillus Cub Scout knife has a locking awl and locking screwdriver/cap lifter and comes pretty close. A touch of filing on the bottom edge of the screwdriver to square it up and it'll throw some sparks off a fire steel. If it only had a saw.

What I'd like is a Cadet-size knife with saw and awl. The saw from the 'My First Victorinox' is the right size and the Cadet nail file could be reground into an awl. I have a small cable blade to replace the can opener. Someday I'll find someone to put it all together for me.

I EDC my Hiker Daily(as I do my izula & LM wave) ,I did add a pin(needle) behind the philips head due to it has a spot for it,small opening for a needle but it does not come with the hiker

I'll add my votes for the SAK Farmer and OHT. The Farmer is what I wished I had back in Scouts, as it's an upgraded BSA-type knife, and the OHT has the longer saw and locking blade.

i cant remember what kind my SAK is. its very similar to the hunter one but it doesnt have the saw on it.. other than that its identical. what kind is mine?

edit, its either the mountaner or the explorer.. leaning towards explorer. i do not use it as much as i used to. found it on sale a long long time ago. in hind site i would have rather bought the hunter version with the saw

This thread inspired me to pick up a sak. I just bought a stayglow camper.

I havent used one of these since i was a kid. If it rekindles and old childhood flame i might buy a stayglow OTH from +B ;)

Yesterday was a little family gathering, my nephew has a Victorinox Huntsman and he takes great delight in sharpening sticks. I showed him how to make notches by first sawing two lines and then carving out the wood in between. We then tied the sticks together and said that if he had more wood and made more notches he could make a model raft. He said that if he got stuck on a desert island then he would use an axe to make a proper sized raft to get home!

In a year or so I'll get him a Mora.

I've had a few SAKs over the years but always give them to friends and family, then buy myself a new one to replace it! At the moment I have a Wenger Evo 17 as my EDC, it also gets daily use in the kitchen as a pairing knife, can opener etc...

I dont think they have been mentioned yet, the Wenger Ranger series. The old ones were 125mm, with the new being 120mm or 130mm. The new blade shape is stronger and offers one handed opening. The real treasure of these is the saw - what a monster for a SAK. A new Ranger 130mm can be picked up for $25.

Cute kids...:D

I hear ya...I always give away SAKs it seems like. IMO its the perfect gift though. I always pass em on to folks who need one and dont know it..:D

A lot of people want to get rid of the can opener because it often gets little use. But it is also a phillips screw driver (which probably gets used almost as much as the blade), and when you need to open a can, you really need it.

I suggest anything in alox. The Farmer is spectacular, but my favorite is the soldier. Victorinox is all I buy, but there is little difference in quality between Wenger and Vic. That and they are owned by the same company.

Old red alox with the big cross is my favorite. Hard to find, but the coolest looking in my opinion. That and they can sometimes be found with a dated blade. Last made in 2001. You can still buy worn ones for cheap and once they're cleaned and oiled, snap like a new one.

I have said it before. The alox soldier (Or any alox for that matter.) is the greatest value in the knife world. Built like tanks. That knife is in my top five, alongside a Strider and a Sebenza. Awesome.

i can't remember the model name (because they don't put it on the knives), but i used to have an EDC SAK with the Philips screwdriver on the end, not in the middle of the back. made much more sense with it on the end, and worked in some places where it wouldn't when it's in the middle. the Phillips on the end was a flat blade, not the round version they put in the middle.

If it was alox, it was a technician. Basically a Soldier with the screw driver instead of the can opener. One of my favorite designs, but almost impossible to find. They routinely go for up to $150 new on ebay. And they hardly ever show up. Too bad they disontinued it as that was the only acceptable replacement for the can opener, in my opinion.
