Let's talk SAK's !

Farmer - here's the one I had modified by Scibeer, removed the bottle opener and can opener. The slim profile is nice.

THAT'S IT!!! That would be the perfect survival/bushcraft/what-ever-you-want-to-call-it knife! Everything you need, nothing you don't. I gotta get me one of those!

This makes a good SAK back pocket combo sheath. I can pair up my Farmer with most of my 4" and under blades. Here it is shown with a 3 3/4" blade. I can slip a ferro rod in next to the knife too.

Just added a Fieldmaster to my collection.

I musta hit it just right last Saturday (surprise sale maybe?) as I got two of them from Amazon for $13.97 each.

Anyway, I thought the addition of the scissors and the hook to the basic Hiker might be beneficial.

I have a couple of fieldmasters myself and think that they might just be the perfect sak. Lots of utility packed into a still pockatable package. Plus with a name like fieldmaster who wouldn't want to carryone.;)

Yeah, yeah, yeah... just don't come around my campsite and wake me up when you need to borrow a corkscrew! (which, at least for single men, may be the least frequently used but potentially most important tool on a SAK). ;)

Stay sharp,

Totally agree on the corkscrew; a SAK is not a SAK without one :D Besides, it gives you a very good reason to leave a knife in the kitchen drawer - no argument with the wife :o

I dont think they have been mentioned yet, the Wenger Ranger series. The old ones were 125mm, with the new being 120mm or 130mm. The new blade shape is stronger and offers one handed opening. The real treasure of these is the saw - what a monster for a SAK. A new Ranger 130mm can be picked up for $25.

How's the blade play? One of the major problems with the Vic one handers is an annoying amount of vertical and horizontal play.

+1 one the corkscrew, but not for its intended purpose. As I've gotten older I've found that the little eyeglasses screwdriver is an essential item for my well being.

As you'll get even older, you'll find the corkscrew to be an even more important item for your well being :D

The heck with the corkscrew. Just push the cork into the bottle.

Besides, $13.97 was too good a price to pass up. At that price, I should have bought a 1/2 dozen instead of just two.

tabee762,

I have one of the old models, which does not have the one hand opening feature. Also, the blade is a clip point. The clip point, combined with its length, makes it a bit fragile for rough work. I keep this in mind when using it. The saw is something else thou, being robust, sharp, and the largest on a SAK that I am aware of. The primary blade does lock, and there is no blade/frame play. The new models are drop points with the opening hole in the blade spine. They are much stronger than the previous generation. Several model 58s just sold on the bay for $25 a pop. Hope this helps.

I have the same one except with a cork screw (I like my wine) and I love every tool on it. Many people, IMO, forget the importance of grooming and keeping to a routine when out in the bush, it does something to keep the mind focus in my case and not to lose your mind along the way on extended trips. Have a beard the sissors come in handy a lot when out hunting or backpacking and you feel like doing a quick trim. I carried one without siccors a while and it really became evident that I needed one for my self and my well being.

SAKs.....what a bonus to any kit.
