Let's talk SAK's !

I like the bottle opener, granted I use it more as a screwdriver and light pry tool than to open bottles, but I do use the tool. At this point I have never held an Alox SAK, but my Farmer & Cadet have shipped ($41.46 for both, free shipping) so I'll have more SAKs before Christmas. The cadet will be my light carry SAK, only a couple of ounces.

I first had a silver farmer and loved it. When those $15 farmers showed up I bought a red one. Now my silver one has been misplaced (disappeared) and wish I had gotten a spare one when they were $15. I finally gave up and ordered a silver harvester. I really like that little hawkbill blade. I have not tried it yet but I bet it will really make some good feather sticks. I never used the ring so I don't miss it.

For me, it would be a Farmer, but with scissors...I guess you can say a Huntsman but with Alox scales :D

...Now a Farmer with scissors and a pocket clip like Swissbianco built and sells is a winner! :)

I didn't realize Roger (aka Swissbianco) made a version also, I'm only familiar with Scibeer's.

My Vic Farmer with the added scissors is my favorite...a very utilitarian and useful combo!

I use a Hiker, but love that Farmer with scissors!

Heres a few on mine

I've mentioned this in similar previous threads and agree that the Huntsman is my ideal SAK. I've got two, a used one I got off FelineVet and a new StayGlow (Glow In The Dark) one. I keep the used one in my EDC backpack and EDC a Midnite MiniChamp in my right rear pocket (sometimes with a Leatherman Squirt P4).
I loved the idea of a Huntsman in Alox so also had Scibeer make one for me. It's called the "Scibeer Stalker". I've had several offers to buy or trade it but I'm hanging on to this one!

I've got both Wenger and Victorinox SAKs. The first new one I purchased was a Wenger Safari model (now discontinued) back around '95. It was similar to the Huntsman but with a phillips screw driver and locking main blade. I used to prefer the Wenger models but now prefer the Vics. I still prefer Wenger scissors and can opener though.

Here's my modest SAK collection:

Here's my ALOX collection:

Here's my Stalker (Caine, I see you've got a modded SAK with FelineVet and Scibeer's special HA III run scales too huh?) Nice!:

Happy to report I solved my dilemma :D

Here's my first SAK mod:

FrontSide02.jpg

Specs: 91mm, three layers: Blades (big and small), Saw, Scissors. Reamer (only) on the back, and tweezers in one of the scales. No lanyard ring and no corkscrew. Epoxied black paper micarta scales. 2.7oz, 16mm thick. My climber is 17mm thick; I agree it doesn't sound like a big difference, but for some reason, it looks and feel considerably thinner.

With the Climber for comparison:

This thread has me all twisted up!!

Now I'm thinkin "I wonder if the handle slabs of the Wenger SI would work on a Vic Farmer or Pioneer Harvester"

I could get the tool mix I like, with the bail on the SI.

I'm sorry to hear that Scibeer retired. I was thinkin of giving him some work. Now I'll have to go and do it myself.

I'd have to say my Huntsman is my favorite SAK at the moment. I'd love a Farmer, but I use the scissors too much. I also don't like the idea of carrying a classic as well. If Scibeer has retired does that mean no more Farmers + scissors? Anyone know of another source?

The Alox Soldier & Pioneer are my favorites (I like to give the Pioneer for gifts as it has an engravable back). I often carry a red Alox farmer when bumming the woods.

If you made more of these, I'm sure people would buy them. I'd be one

For my woods use, I'd love an alox SAK with Large blade, small blade, saw, awl, designated firesteel striker, and tweezers that grip like the Silver Grippers.

For a more versatile but bulkier tool, I'd add the cap lifter, bottle opener -- but with crisp edges and corners so they grip better. And scissors.

The Farmer will forever be my favorite EDC knife. Over the last couple of years, it has become more of less permanently attached to me. The paracord lanyard clips to a belt loop every morning. I tried a few different types of lanyards before deciding on this one. The others frequently got hung up on tree branches and other bits of my environment. This braided paracord lanyard is just rigid enough not to get snagged on stuff, but supple enough to conform to however I'm attaching it.

I really do appreciate the fact that I EDC a Farmer, on days that I'm out in the woods. I've tried a lot of knives in outdoor situations, and they're never as comfortable or intuitive as the knife you use every day. It's so easy to get frustrated with or make mistakes with a knife that you're not used to, when placed in an uncomfortable situation, when things start to get cold and wet. Having a knife that you've proven to yourself, and know all the ins and outs of, makes all the difference during those times. Muscle memory rocks.

I usually combo the Farmer with a Vic Executive. The two tools together make an incredibly potent combo. The Executive has a nail file far superior to other Victorinox offerings, and better scissors than those found on the Classic. The Exec also gets me the much valued tweezers and toothpick. And when an emergency arises, it's often nice to have a small, clean, precise, and freshly sharpened blade.

The Huntsman is also great for woods bummin'. Here are a couple of Huntsmans that I rescaled. One is orange G-10. The other is green canvas micarta.

^^Buzzbait and defaultuser, nice mods guys! I really should give modding a try. I'd like to re-scale my Huntsman with some G10 or micarta also.

Buzzbait What knot is it you used in making that lanyard?

I believe that is a "hangman's noose". It's how I tie my lanyards, anyway (and it looks just like the photo)

(I meant the bottom photo)
