Letting people borrow knife?

Whenever I'm at work, people ask to borrow my knife. My problem is:
a) if my knife is sharp I'm worried they will cut themselves
2) if my knife is dull they will think i have a dull knife
iii) if i say no they will be offended
So my question is, do any of you let people use your knives? Ever had any problems because of it? Or if you do not let people use your knives why not? And how do you tell them no?

I loaned my Vic OHT to a co-worker (non knife person) several years ago when he was replacing an overhead flourescent bulb in a conference room. I thought he would use the flat blade screwdriver to pry the tab that held the assembly together open. Instead, he used the closed knife as a hammer and began beating on the metal tab trying to loosen it.

That was the last time.

If someone needs something cut I'll offer to cut it for them.

I'll usually offer assistance cutting or slicing whatever it is they need. Too many times have I seen people abuse knives, and other times have witnessed people almost getting cut in mishandling slip joints.

Chances are you may get your knife back in worse shape when you get back.

Ask them what theyre going to cut with it...be safe do it for them!!

my reply, with respect to any "good" knife i have:

...only to a known knife person/friend...to a unknown, no; even if they know i have one on person, no...

...a poster asked how can one say no if they ask; no problem, i just say no.

If they have a knife of their own, they don't need yours -- except to abuse it in a way they won't inflict on their property.

If they don't have a knife of their own, you would be wrong to believe they even know how to use it properly.

Loaning a knife is asking for damage to the knife or damage to the borrower.

I'm able to EDC a nice folder (spyederco chinook 3) and a multi (leatherman wave).

I have no problems handing out the leatherman or care what it'd be used for. But to answer the question, no - i'd never hand out or lend me primarty EDC blade to anyone.

I usually have an old buck bantam as well as whatever I'm carrying, and I lone that out to people.

+1

I usually ask what it is they need to cut.

I will sometimes, but it depends on what they are doing with it. From past experience they want to pry and use it as a screwdriver and abuse the heck out of it.

Whenever I have had serious doubts about letting someone see my knife, they either:
a) cut themselves
b) dropped it (by accident, but still pissed me off)

Last time I loaned a knife I came back and saw the person using it to tighten screws. It ruined a cheap knife, but if I was carrying an expensive knife I would have been pissed.

I will to a few people who I know and trust.

most of the time I say "what for?" and then just cut whatever needs to be cut for them.

I say "yes" to the people who really know me because they know how I feel about my knives and they would never abuse the knife. to those who don't know me or at least know me well, they often don't realize I am carrying one so they don't ask. to the few that have asked I say "no" and have never had someone question as to why not.

One of the guys on my team at work asked another guy to borrow his knife and he proceeded to pull staples with the blade. It was a cheap $4 china folder, and it ate the tip of the blade up.

The loaner was pissed and the borrower paid the guy $4 to get another knife. Yet another reason I don't lend mine out.
