Letting people borrow knife?

I dont loan out my knife, just my body to cut something for them. If they insist on borrowig my knife, I tell them to buy their own

occasionally a coworker needs something cut, so i'll usually offer to do it for them. they know that i carry knives and use them often, so if something needs cutting they'll usually just ask me to do it anyway.

that said, if somebody needs to borrow a knife, i'll usually hand them my Case baby butterbean or a cheapo winchester stockman i carry just for that reason. sharp enough to do the job, friendly-looking, and easy to operate. just right for non-knife people.

I never loan. Instead, I ask what they need to be done and offer to do the job myself.

last time i loaned mine out was to guy at work. I had *just* sharpened it before going to work on my edge pro. He took it and used it to push cut through 1/2" pvc tubing. When the pvc gave way his thumb went right down into the blade with a lot of force. He bled for 2 hours and kept wrapping paper towels on his thumb until it FINALLY quit.
Guess he didn't believe me when i handed it to him and told him, "careful its sharp".

+1

I always have a Vic Classic or Cadet Alox for people to borrow. I will let other "knife people" borrow my main folder but there's too few of those kinds around.

Man your not kidding about too few. I don't know a single person that would I would even consider to be a knife person. The only reason friends of mine have nice knives is because I bought them for them.

It is nice to chat here. You guys seem to understand the importance of a quality knife.

If it's someone I don't know too well, I always ask what they're going to use it for.

If it's someone I know, I have no problem letting them borrow my work/beater knife whatsoever. I haven't managed to break it yet, I dare them to try :p

There are of course exceptions to that, but if it's someone who I know has a healthy respect for tools and knives, I don't mind lending them a knife at all, even over the long term.

To my close and trusted family/friends, yes, without question. My friends are worth more to me than any knife I own.

To strangers/casual acquaintances/co-workers. Only if it is oblivious what they need it for and it will be returned within a few minutes without leaving my sight. i.e. if they are trying to open a package or cut some rope and I can hand them my knife, they complete the task, and hand it back; I'm OK with it.

I will not loan my knife to anyone unless I know for a fact they are knowledgeable in the ways of the knife. Too many horror stories that others have shared, as has been stated I'll either cut it for them or if available loan them an easily replaced beater.

i'll cut stuff for people now, after watching people struggle with opening (including throwing the knife across the room whilst trying to flip it open) and REALLY struggle with closing my knives.

There is a bit of liability in loaning out something that can be a weapon. Regardless of how the person intends to use it there can be problems or perceptions that lead to the knife never coming back. I consider this and other potential problems on a case by case basis.

Most people I know don't ask in the first place and strangers are an automatic no (see above).

The ONLY knives that I loan out are when I am camping with friends.

I have a few Moras, a CS Finn Wolf, and a cheap camp axe.

They can never borrow anything else. "Just say no"

If they just want to see my knife and fondle it, then that is only allowed if they have a nice knife for me to fondle.

To people who have a clue; yes, my large Douk Douk, to people who don't have a clue; my Gerber LST, to no-one my Benchmade 710 d2.:D

I had a plumber at my house doing some work, i gave him my LM wave when he needed the fine screwdriver, not a problem. he then needed to remove a silicone seal from a tap shroud.
he says "can i borrow your knife?"
figuring he just meant knife as in the whole leatherman and that he was just gonna use a screwdriver i reluctantly agreed.
he then got out the blade and started using the back of the tip to scrape of the silicone WITH HIS THUMB ON THE BLADE.
im still cringing. thank god the blade was duller than usual and he didnt cut himself.

i wont even loan a blade out to my dad, the last time he did he used a propane torch to heat it up and cut out plastic inserts from a tool case.
i was very disappointed.

At work I have a box knife I will let someone use. When not at work I carry an extremely sharp Military, it doesn't get loaned out, don't want anyones blood on my knife. If they knew how to use a knife they should have one. I will ask what do you need it for and if it is a cutting job, I will do it for them.

They will do one of two things either abuse it or cut themselves. I just offer to cut whatever needs cutting or suggest the proper tool if its not a job for a knife.

I don't loan mine out... no exceptions. I say "What do you want me to cut?" If they tell me, I cut it for them. If they say they'd rather do it, I tell them to find some scissors.

I don't really care whether they like what I tell them or not.

I always ask what they need it for and offer to do it myself. I also EDC tools other than knives, so if it's not strictly for cutting I will usually have a better tool. Should I decide to loan it, I always warn them that mine is far sharper than their average knife.
