Wow, like PH blades with a nice finish!!;)

I don't know why people have to have a beef with the finish of Phill's blades? They are users and work whether it's pretty or looks rough ! Either way, they're great !

I dont have beef with his finish, I have said before more power to him if he can get away with it for the money he gets.. I was "trying" to give you a compliment on your finish.. Although it is poor form for a maker to criticize another makers work. My bad.

I know you were complimenting my stuff :D I was just kinda asking a general out loud question as to why for some it's gonna be all about the finish and they almost disregard how well the blade actually operates.

Ok, to my way of thinking and this is just my opinion mind you..
Very DEEP scratches, and sharp edges on spines and anywhere the hand contacts has several negative effects to what I consider the performance of a knife. These can be but not limited to, premature corrosion and pitting in A2 particularly, stress points that can promote a blade failure when laterally stressed, hot spots on your hand from rubbing against sharp corners on the spine or anywhere its sharp, also gunk is much harder to get out of the valleys in heavy grinds which can have several negative effects, and just make a knife a PITA to keep clean.

I'm a HUGE advocate of a "user grade finish" but hell even I'll go up to 400 grit or so..;) That finish worked very well on A2 which I pretty much made my rep with, and was a good compromise for performance and ease of finish, and RE-finish when a customer asked for a refurb..

Like I said... Just me.

I'm guessing you're refering to Phill's blades? In which I'm guessing the sharp edges on spines and stuff like that generally have a guard protecting the hand and or something stopping the hand from slipping forward or just not used in that manner. I know for a fact that he has ever only had ONE blade break where the tang was slotted in for a guard and the corners were 90degrees where when the impact of the BULLET that hit it while the soldier was carrying it on his back was shot. and from that they (Phill and his son) changed the way the tangs were then slotted on and guards attached. There are no hard corners otherwise on his blades that would cause a stress point to accidently snap the blade, etc etc.

Then again, if you're just talking about A2 in general and any body using it or grinding it, then sure why not !

Trace----Let's see a pic of one of your blades that you described, please.

I dont use much A2 these days, but this is an evaluation by a pretty well respected guy. That blade was made quite a while ago though, and the pics are kinda rough. http://www.survival.com/trace.htm

Also if you do Google search for my name you can see quite a bit of my work.. Most of it is finished in the fashion I described. You probably wont find as much written about me as Master Po, but theres a few people out there that have used my knives.

BTW Master Po, I just stated my opinion since you asked, related to what I have personally seen in the very few PH knives I have held. I will admit I am not a PH afficianado. You obviously have all the answers, and seeing as how your such a well known in-demand maker I will not waste your time with my opinions any further.

Pohan your work is fantastic and I admire you for being respectful of Phill. I do not know The Phill you guy's know but the Phill I know is kind and warm when we hang up or finish an email we often might say I love ya buddy take care. And yes it was a free Christmas present most are. pohan I have watched your work for awhile now and I really like it wishing you the best

I asked for your opinions and then told you what I knew first hand :D That's all. I am not in the business of criticizing what someone thinks or does. You are not wasting my time at all.

I think whatever someone thinks is their own right and i'm not gonna SHIT on it, but I will however tell them what I know....they can take it for what I say or not. Phill's blades CUT....some of them AREN'T SO PRETTY....but Phill never claimed he made beautiful knives, just ones that do what they were built for. :D

I am FAR from a master and maybe people want my stuff, but no more than people want stuff from the next guy.

Thanks Joe. :D I appreciate that. I CAN'T say Phill feels the same way about me. But that's his right to dislike me because I make something that looks like his only because I think it's super cool looking in his style! I will STILL backup of what I know of Phill's product since I believe in it myself and have seen what his blades can do first hand.

Pohan please do not take this the wrong way because I really do like your work and you seem like a good dude but I can see how Phill might be a little upset you really do make a great knife and they do resemble from the signature to the grinds one of Phill's knives I would take it as a complament not an insult. But I am not Phill .Phill has never mentioned anything to me negative about anyone. Hell even one of My buddy's sons played with some of my Hartsfield's and ended up making some of these.

Your constant positive attitude, respect for others work, and humbleness towards your own, is why I respect you so much Pohan.

Besides, you make one awesome knife no matter how you cut it!:thumbup::D

Uh yeah you "told" me that PH told you this.. How can anyone know for a "fact" ANYTHING about ALL the knives he has ever produced in his career, do you track them with GPS or something? I dont even care if its true, Im just pointing out how lame that sounds..
Also your opinion on what REALLY cuts means very little to me after seeing the cutting demo's on your site. I have seen Ginsu knives do better than that at swap meets. I didnt want to get shitty, in fact I was trying to compliment your work. I wont make that mistake again.
You keep right on doing what yer doing, making direct copies of another makers work, and trying to argue your way to success... It sure seems to be working well judging by the for sale area, and how your work is holding value.
I'll keep doing things my way as well, it IS working for me..;)

I dont want to argue with you any longer, I was bored today and should have just kept my mouth shut in the first place. Im sure you will want to turn this into another 18 page PH thread again, calling attention to yourself along the way though. Who knows it might work after a while. Good Luck!

BTW, I just re-read that post.. Thats awesome!! How come the BEST stories of the "single failure" always involve the knife being shot while being carried by a soldier..:D:p:thumbup:

I thought that was a pretty awesome story, too:D.

go to phills shop. see broken knife. its that easy.

These ridiculous threads would never be, if all would remember a Golden-Rule:
If you can't say something nice... Shut the #@#* up!! :)
Really, though.

And this is why having a conversation with the written word can suck sometimes.
Trace, I didnt see anything in leu's post to warrant your remarks. Looks like you have taken what he was saying to you as personal or flippant.
Seems like the real reason you insulted him was because he is copying another makers work. Honestly i have a problem with that too and it's why I wont purchase one of his knives. Im not attacking you leu. You make a damn fine looking knife but branch out a little and expand on phill's work. Dont rip it off.
just my thoughts guys.
