Life after Becker.......

It's a matter of degree..

If the main grind and the micro bevel is shallow enough - the reduced cutting power would not even be noticed. The basic blade geometry(main grind height and blade thickness) are the most important factors .

Which is why Ethan himself has mentioned that the older he gets the more he is gravitating toward thinner blades. It's also the reason why he pushed hard for the blade grind on his new baby- the BK16 drop point- to be raised to a full height blade grind.

If you are doing all around brushcraft work with a thin Scandi edge and normal blade steels the risk of rolling/chipping that edge is very really when battoning chop[ping etc. Unless you are suing something like CMP-#V most guys who use a Scandi edge for anything other than Carving /slicing put a small microbevel on it. The Finns do it regularly.

Ok that makes sense, I guess where I was confused is that in the video it looks like those blades are of substantial thickness thus not needing an stronger edge. The geometry of a ffg or sabre grind would be sufficient. I could see a mora or a similar narrow blade benefiting from a scandi. but those looked as thick or thicker that the BK14. However like you said if its a dedicated bush tool a stronger edge would make sense. Definitely some interesting looking knives.

so, i've been wondering, with so much hate for scandi edge? why is it that they are still used? and have been for hundreds of years? it's not like that's an easy edge to get, but it sure cuts a treat.

sort of by definition, they're used for bushcrafting too... i mean, really, culturally significant, working tools over a long period of time...

it's not like there's a "greek edge" or a "japanese edge" by name, per se, eh?

Hopefully I didn’t come off as hating the scandi edge. I was simply curious about it. I am by no means bashing it. I have no grounds to! I’ve never even used a knife with one. Just trying to better my understanding of why people/ knife makers use them so much. I was just under the impression that a scandi edge would not produce as good of a cutter as some other grinds. If these knives are cheap I might have to try one at some point. Worst comes to worst I could always re-profile it. After all I am Danish (last name Svensen) so maybe it’s in my blood to like scandi grinds how knows ;)

I don't frankly understnd how anywone could get the imrpession their was "hate" for the scandi edge.

Everything has it's downside . When ground thin for best carving ability It's not the best edge for chopping and in dressing game tends to roll and chip on bone. I have seen this myself. It's great edge profile or certain uses but it's not perfect.

And BTW, the modern machine ground Scandi edge is NOT the same edge as was used before the industrial revolution . Those historic single bevel edges were actually convex grinds. Mainly because the blades were hand ground and also a dead flat sharpening stones diamond cards etc really did not exist then. Basically those edges were thin saber convex grinds.

course, one guy i was talking to admitted he never even saw one, but got his opinion from some nut video on youtube or something :)

sheesh. if you're going to hate something, at least get first hand knowledge of it, use it, break it, something ... :D

i have to go practice my mad skills at room clearing on call of duty or something...

Baldeite..

I got your drift now.;)

Yes their are folks in the world with very biased opinions on lots of things. And many of them are based on total ignorance about that which they claim to loathe.:(

So I am still trying to get some good shots of the nessie. Like these handles. No frills.
