Life altering dog attack.

+1 for some pepper spray. Are you allowed to carry knives on the job? Because If I were you in that situation, I'd be going for my blade if a dog had me on the ground. The consequences later would suck, but I dont know if I'd be thinking about them at the time.

Glad you're ok. When I was a kid, I used to swim at a friends house in the summer. The people that owned the house once told us about a half german shepherd half rotty named Trooper that their neighbors owned. Said he had a black body with a brown head and the owners trained him to kill. One day we went swimming and as we were leaving, I walked out the gate by myself before my mom came around the corner and saw a massive black bodied brown headed beast of a dog right behind me. I jumped back over that fence with superhuman strength in what seemed like less than half a second. The next week.. the people who owned the house said that Trooper died a few months before. So either I saw a ghost, or Trooper's twin brother.

Another story.. My friend (about 52 years old) was outside when a pit bull from out of no where bolted towards a little girl's smaller dog and started chewing it up. My friend ran over (pretty strong ex air force guy) and started kicking the pit in the sides as hard as he could to the point of straining a couple muscles in his leg and that dog would not stop attacking the other dog. He'd never seen anything like it. Eventually the pit got bored I guess and just ran off. Needless to say, when hes in his yard, my friend has a Pistol or a big knife within close reach.

I love dogs. I despise those who mistreat dogs. But If I'm ever attacked by one.. I wont hesitate to shoot or slash it till it's dead or off of me.

I would go with the pepper spray. Out mail carrier keeps it on hand.

Glad you're ok. When I first saw the title, I got real scared. First thing I thought of was your little ones. Anyways, glad to hear that it turned out ok in the end.

Does Texas honor CCW's from other states? It may be cheaper/quicker to look into one from Pennsylvania or Florida.

Yea, $150 for the class and then the paperwork gets shipped off with another $150 and then almost a year later your permit comes in the mail.

I think I could skimp on the class a bit but it's at least $135, thats the cheapest I've seen.

The only dog that's ever bitten me was a husky. It was my cousin's and that dog hated any male creature with the exception of my cousin, probably because he was around him since he was a puppy I guess, but he drew blood on me when I was 11 years old. We were playing frisbee and it landed within the radius of his staked-in chain in the yard. I ran in to get the frisbee and the dog started coming for me, I hauled ass out of there but he nipped the back of my leg just as the chain went tight. One time that dog bit the hell out of my uncle's arm, many stitches required.

We have a 9-y.o. german shepherd. Great dog, perfect temperament. Very protective of the wife which is nice when I'm not home. He'll bark and growl at anybody walking in front of the house because it's his turf, but if we introduce him to somebody he's instantly friendly, wants to lick them and get ear scratches and belly rubs. He scares the crap out of strangers who come to our door, but if strangers assume he's trying to eat them that's not necessarily a bad thing. Most of his value as a four-legged security system is based on people's fears of the breed in general, because he's too much of a puss to actually bite anyone.

go to your local law enforcement supply store and pick up a 2 oz bottle of phase IV or body guard ps.....it will run you about 18 bucks.........If you can't find any let me know my best friend owns such a store and I can pick you some up before rat fest..Make sure to get stream and not cone because in windy conditions you might get a faceful back.

Carry a loud air horn like they use on boats to signal...It'll scare the bejesus out of any dog. :D And they aren't that big or heavy and would be easy enough to carry. Glad you are okay.

Well I am not a dog person. I used to be a paper boy. I had to be taken to the hospital for stitches after my encounter with two Rotweilers. Most of my friends are dog owners. I am glad you survived. I have been nervous around dogs all my adult life. The house at the end of my road has a bunch of bulldogs. They bit a few local kids. Animal control did nothing. I don't walk there any more. Her dogs always chased me, and she refused to do anything about it. I know folks love their pets, but humans have rights, too. I have to drive some place else just to walk. Generally, I am a live and let live kind of guy, but all these folks around with dangerous uncontrolled dogs tick me off. I have had to rescue my daughter from the dogs on occasion. I carry a big stick and do not hesitate to use it, but to avoid conflict, I just don't walk down my private road any more. But one day, I may just do some thinning of the pack.

Just get a chocholate bar, mix in some rat poison and heat it up and roll it into a ball and set it out near the dogs. Should quietly take care of them. Or if you get a chance, just run over em with the tire of your truck.

Not cool.

Not the right thing to do to those dogs, nor to other dogs who might get to it first. Poison is a coward's solution. Show some class.

I can't state my full opinion here (not in this forum anyway) but needless to say I disrespect you.

My cousin Lynn has a dog that she rescued from the pound a long time ago that stays in a nice little fenced in area in her backyard. It has bitten a few people and is obviously extremely aggressive to anyone but Lynn.

....crazy when it comes to ANYONE else.

...the dog came full tilt boogie at us barking and snarling. My parents and wife jumped back in the truck and I reached in and grabbed Betty from under the backseat. (Betty is the truck machete) I closed the door to the truck and stood there. As the dog got close it started slowing down and barking and growling a lot louder. I thought, "I'm going to kill this dog. It's just too dangerous." I yelled at the dog, "If you come one step closer or bark one more time, I'm going to rip your f@#$ing face off. Now shut the f@#$ up and back off!"

I talked to her at great length about how much of a threat he was, not only to other people, but to her. I explained to her that if he got out and attacked someone, they could take everything she owns and even press charges against her.

I like dogs and think they make great pets, but from what you said (main bits left in quote above) that dog isn't a pet, it's a liability. Like I said, I like dogs but if it attacked me, I would probably kill it. Do I want it to die? No, of course not, but some dogs just aren't safe to be around.

Shotty, not to sound cruel but.....

Big dog charges you, you defend with your weak arm, draw your Izula with your strong arm and cut his throat. Not fun, not pretty, but you live thru it. I will have to look around, but I actually saw a police video on it once.

I have been attacked a number of times, and worse had my dogs, my family friendly pups go nuts on someone for some reason unknown. My dogs are very very very (VERY!!!) protective of my family, and Timber (who has now passed on) got to be right around 140lbs. He took you down, you were NOT going to walk away from it without killing him. A husky up here killed two teens back in the late 80's that jumped the fence into the wrong yard as a shortcut. In the early 90's a 4 year old was torn to shreads by a wolf hybred when she wandered away from her daycare and crawled thru a fence to "go pet the puppies" she had walked past with her Mom. The Wolf was protecting her pups, and she did when animal control came to have her and all her pups destroyed, almost killing one of the animal control people.

Anyways, dogs can and will kill. The fear may go away, it has for me. But never forget, left arm up, they WILL grab/bite onto it, right arm drawing blade, slashed directly and firmly across the throat, be bummed out later.

EDIT: I don't give a damn if the dog is doing it's "job" protecting the house. I am not there unless I am suspose to be there. And I am not going to die or get mauled because on some level I feel bad for a dog just doing his job. I love my dogs, they ARE family to me. I wouldn't never suggest harming one that wasn't attacking you.

Pistol. I'm just saying. I've already thought about a bad dog scenario, where in theory I try to defend with my weak/left arm while drawing with my right. But I know things happen fast, and they always happen unexectedly or you would not be in that situation in the first place.

Even if Fluffy disarmed you, he would probably not know how to use it against you.

Pepper spray might be the next best thing, though I have no idea if/how it affects a motivated dog.

Just something to consider.

That dog could have killed you, you know, if it got a good clamp down on your throat or head, or exsanguinated you while refusing to let you get up.

more than likely you'd been in trouble with the city ,the land owner and I can see lawsuits flying if Shotty would of had a pistol legally and killed the dog. I bet Shotty's brother would of lost his company...
for those that dont know shotgunner personally ,he is a big boy and for that dog to take him down and damn near mess him up shows the power big dogs have. I am glad he is ok physically... Mrs. S & shotty both emailed me day of the attack... I glad your OK brother..man that could of been bad..very bad.hope your fears pass after time brother....

Damn! Glad to hear that you're okay. Dem husky's are CRAZY. Not "evolved" enough to be trusted.

See I differ on opinion.. you technically in the eyes of the law are trespassing. ,let's see ... owner not home, you do your job in the front write a note and leave saying you'll return later to do the back yard when dog is restrained or inhouse via owner. I have explain this to my yard crew who cut my grass ,do the front if I am home dogs will be locked up in patio and you may proceed to do the back yard... you come into my back yard and kill my dog ,I will sue your ass , why are you in my back yard... doing the lawn dog charged I killed him... I am not home you come back.. you do go into the back yard and assualt/kill my dog on his land you are the trespasser I will own you in the court of law.dog sign mean nothing ,telling people dont go back there he'll bite means little and if you have them restrain on a cable /tied to a tree the SPCA will be on your ass for cruel punishment so what do you do...tell people to stay out of the yard. my dog is clearly visible and will chew you up....if you dont belong. if you mace my dog,I will complain and hire someone else.:D
not a Shot at Shotgunner but I was thinking of my Lawn guys ,who let my dog out more than once not thinking...
