Lignum Vitae

That might be my favorite Goo knife ever. I'd love to own that if it's ever sold. Hint hint...

i hear you, senator, but... sorry, won't be sold very soon :D btw. ric furrer smelted the wootz for this blade.

i'v got another nice one from tai, the "reverse tanto" or "david's knife" or whatever, very nice lignum vitae handle, greenish with that typical fishbone pattern. unfortunately the photo is much too dark, sorry. there's a better picture on tai's web site, i think, but his site is down...:

That's OK, Hans. At least now I know who's got it. ;) Besides, you've got plenty of others I'd like, too. Let's start with that Foster Blue Bowie... :D

Wow, that's a nice piece Lorien!

Great knives by Tai posted in this thread, wow!

I really liked STR's post... very informative and in line with what I've learned of the stuff over the years.

I told Lorien via email, that my Great-grandfather's saw mill used the stuff for bearings, riser blocks, and the like. I found a piece that had been used as a "beater block" and thought it was copper or brass that was dirty, greasy, and tarnished.

I set it up and started cutting it on the metal bandaw before I realized it was wood, lol :)

Lorien, I hope you aren't planning on using that when you're here... you need at least a year after you cut it close to size (or so) so it won't move on you. It is a GREAT piece of lignum

aha! Maybe we could cut it up into some handle shaped pieces while I'm there...

p.s. I'm not used to guys complimenting my wood. It's old hat with the ladies though;):D But hey, I'm an open minded guy:p

Much of what is being called lignum vitae is actually verawood. These two woods are related, but verawood is not lignum vitae.

Verawood:

I've always liked the stuff. Shame, as I never get a call for it.

I use it on a personal hunter I carried for several years but as usual, some one wanted it more than me!

Still miss it though!

That's ok, Michael- I'd be happy to send you a couple of scales once I get it sliced up. Just let me know the size and I'll throw it in the mail.

Been a few times I've stopped into Woodcraft and they've had some pretty good sized turning blocks for sale. I'd thought about grabbing one once as you could easily get a few handle sized blocks from it.
