Snipped. So far, so good. Going to do almost nothing except sit around the house this whole weekend and read, write, surf, watch movies, and maaaaybe catch up on some paperwork.

Glad your feeling alright so far. Take it easy this weekend. Youve earned it. lol.

So, I've been thinking about something that Moose and I were talking about while in the shop. He said micarta is great for the top of a bow drill cause the spindle moves freely.

I've been thinking, what about getting a small block of teflon, cutting a divot into it and keeping that in the pocket of the knife and using that on top of the spindle.

Wife was asking me what I wanted for my birthday, as well as Christmas. Decisions, decisions. I know I want something outdoorsy, but what? Was thinking about a new tarp, I need one of those. Was also thinking about some insulated coverall, those are nice in the winter. Hmmm... Not really wanting any new blades at the moment. Notice I said, at the moment, cause I'm always seeing some blade I want.

I was thinking about getting here a BK14 for Christmas. Told her way back that I thought about getting her one. She liked the idea.

Dubz, amongst our group here I think one of the things most easily overlooked is either new gear or better gear that isn't knives. Eventually you reach a point where you don't need anymore, but for a lot of us that point is pretty far off. I try to alternate between knives and either 1 rather costly item or several small lower cost items. For bigger costlier gear I would consider your water filters, hammocks, tents, tarps (some of them at least) and packs. Smaller stuff though, you can make quite a list of that. Mess kit, stove, cookware, utensils, things to hold your kit and gear in like waterproof boxes or dry bags, etc... all are things worth getting squared away on as well. My best purchase in the last two years? A snugpak sleeping bag that goes small enough to actually be able to fit in my damn pack. What kinda tarp do you have now?

I have some of the stuff mentioned. Don't have a water filter, or hammock. I was thinking about a two person backpacking tent, but the nicer ones are costly. We're limited on funds, as we have a lot of people to buy for. I bought a Snugpak, but couldn't fit in the damn thing, and gave it to my wife. She needed a nice sleeping bag anywhos. I only have one of those cheapo camo/poly tarps right now. I don't have a nice one. I like some of the tarps they have at BCUSA.

I like the sawyers water filter, just saying. about 60 bucks but filters a million gallons so if you got alot of people its great. no filters or anything to worry bout. you clean it urself. and theres lots of options for using it.

Scariest 'knife' I own. This thing demands respect from the user, or else. I'm a double bit afraid of it:

Gorgeous axe. I've been watching eBay for a double bit head to hang.

Gear note. Got these for a song at that place in Wyoming. The one that rhymes with Bee-Err-Ah Mating Toast.
Aside from being Chi-com in origin, they are a well thought out design. Basically have the "Cap-Cap" built in.

there can be no other :>

There was a day, long ago, that Poulan Commercial ruled the chainsaw world... Alas, Poulan got bought out, and the brand turned to shit... In today's world, Stihl is the undisputed king.... used by pros everywhere... its what I bought my crews...

Way to rock the chain

Doc

I hear ya Dubz. My favorite tarp is by far the 10'x10' Equinox Urethane coated Ripstop Nylon with tie downs instead of grommets. It has tie downs everywhere you could ever want to have a tie down. Campmor has em for around $40 or so last I checked.

EDIT: Eeek, price went up to $55. Their website calls it the "10 ft. x 10 ft. Versatile Nylon Tarp" and the pictures really make it look like it is not square, but it is. Rolls up to about the size of that Guyot bottle you got, only not as thick.

I have eyed those down a few times. BCUSA has a realtree-ish one called "True Timber" I like the looks of. Not sure how good it is though.

I've got a Machax and BK11 package up on the For Sale and Trade section of the exchange if anyone's interested.
I'm wanting to thin down on my Beckers just a bit.
I think a 5,9,11,16 combo will suit my needs well for awhile.

Damn daizee you just reminded me to pick up a haft for my "new" 4 lb. plumb.

I like the Tennessee Hickory handles pretty well so far. They are thick. If you have the means to sculpt them, that's good. Also discovered that I like them thicker than I thought. I ordered three online. "Link" handles also are very nice - they are more sculpted. They can be found online and also at a major reputable hardware franchise whose name sounds like 'space'.

Iv ordered from house handle a few times before good grain on all of them. I find that most of the link handles I find have a bad grain orientation but they do feel good in my hands. Iv heard good things about handles from J Hollywood so I might give those a try.

The tarp Guyon had at Ethan's was a pretty nice looking one. In addition to my hammock, the woman and I sleep in an REI halfdome tent.
